I was tempted to buy 2 already also but I want to see what I get with 1 first before fully diving in. People say 1 is the most boring/least great of the 3 so we'll see.

I heard this was school social sim a la Persona so...any benefits to waifuing certain characters first or nah?

Also, Cold Steel one is technically the 6th game in the series, just so you're aware.

So the game kinda just throws you in without really explaining mechanics. Arts I can see are charged stuff and crafts happen right away. I don't quite get the s break stuff and how assists and links work (proximity maybe?). Hope they explain it a bit later

You've already seen that characters have crafts, that cost CP to use. They also have like a super craft, S-Craft, that requires a minimum of 100 CP to use and spends it all, with an additional boost if they are at a full 200. S-Crafts are unique in that you can use them even when it isn't that characters turn, which is S-Break. Breaking the turn order to use their S-craft. It's great for stealing good turn bonuses like sepith up, crit, str up, or whatever else and making sure bosses don't get it. They have a relatively lengthy delay before that character will get to act again, so use them wisely.
Attacks and crafts have a chance to "unbalance" an enemy, doing so gives you the option to let their link partner hit the target. Every character has attack types associated with them, Slash, Thrust, Pierce, and Strike, and ranks for those types. Enemies have weaknesses to those types, exploiting it will increase the chance of unbalance.
You should eventually be able to freely swap who is linked with who.
It should explain things more as you go along. The start just throws you in to try to get you hooked before it goes through the maybe somewhat lengthy introduction things.

Should I be using arts? I mostly just use the craft attacks. I have that Emma girl use arts sometime but crafts just feel more effective.

in the cold steel games crafts are easily spammable, and the in the case of 1 and 2 you can just use delay on 2 users to break virtually every encounter in the game. Emma, Jusis, and Alisa can hit pretty hard with the right master quartz setups and arts support with their bond links but it's like a billion times easier to just melee the shit out of everything with rean, fie, laura, and Alisa as a cp battery

I actually wouldnt know about that. Most places Ive seen seem to consider the latest trails the goty of last year. You say that about everything though so Ill wait for more trustworthy opinions.

Pretty much. Only negative thing I've heard about CS3 and 4 is that there are too many romance options, which I kinda agree with, but it doesn't make the games bad either.

Opinions, but we'll see. I'm just about finished Sky FC and the writing seems pretty much the same quality. Maybe it'll get better from here. Can't say I really care, as I've enjoyed the story for all the titles I've played so far.

If the writing actually does get any better, that seems like something to look forward to rather than complain about.
