Yeah, that ending was absolutely godawful, and there was way too much to fit into a regular film run-time. This would've benefited from being a season-long series to flesh characters and events out. It felt rushed as hell having played DQ5; I can only imagine how someone unfamiliar with the series would've felt.

I watched this last night.

Some thoughts about the ending:

I totally get why people hate it, because I know for a fact I wasn't supposed to be laughing at the big reveal harder than I have at anything about as far back as I can remember. Two movies in one year with the same absurd twist? Seriously? And if anyone watching this movie isn't truly familiar with the Dragon Quest series, especially V, that's about all it's good for.

At the same time, it does actually make some sense in context, as someone who is familiar with Dragon Quest. A core tenet of the Dragon Quest series has always been how it makes you, the player, and the hero one and the same; going with an ending of this ilk reaffirms that while also reflecting the movie's title. Likewise, Nimzo's role in the plot reflects his chessmaster conceit nicely, which otherwise would have been difficult for the movie to pull off.

It's basically the same ending as The LEGO Movie, just adjusted for the source material, and it worked like a charm there to reflect that brand's identity while adding an emotional touch to what otherwise would have been 'merely' a fun adventure. Obviously, that's what they were shooting for here; unfortunately, the crucial difference is that The LEGO Movie's in-universe adventure really happened in its real world.

For better or worse, this would have just been a second-rate CG animated movie version of Dragon Quest V if it weren't for its ending, and that might not have been worth my time to watch even as a major Dragon Quest fan.
