WW2 and Nazi history buff*

Its Ok, I still read up on WW2, though its mostly about the Japanese/US conflict.

Oh, I will admit that reading about Nazis is not weird to me, but maybe collecting all those memorabilia is a little creepy. To be fair, I would really, really love to hold and possibly fire a German Karabiner 98, but why would anyone keep 32 copies of Mein Kampf?

When did this topic become your bizarre platform to start ranting about collectors?

not ranting about anyone

nothing but love in my heart.

The other guy just said buying cheap replicas shows obsession while buying expensive identical "real thing " shows restraint and a love for whatever you are collecting , not collecting itself

I feel the exact opposite

She originally planned to get a copy of every single edition

but there are so many and they get pricey so she gave up

See this is were we disagree

I think once you're forking over big bucks for things that have identical cheap replicas it's no longer about the history , its because you get off on it.
Indeed. I think once you start having cheap replicas made, it's no longer about ownership of an artefact, of a piece of history, it's because you've fallen a little bit in love with the history it represents. Most genuine collectors don't boast about owning fakes; instead, they're proud of owning something because it has a genuine, direct connection to the past. And you're right: sometimes for them, it doesn't matter quite so much about what that past was; it simply matters to them that they have something old and real. But that clearly isn't the rationale for someone who has a replica made. If you buy fake Superman mementoes, surely it's because you love Superman.

But let me explain where I'm coming from, and why I'd be cagey about dating a girl who has a collection of Nazi memorabilia that extensive, so lovingly assembled. As I said, I've been acquainted with compulsive collectors of Nazi memorabilia (including fakes!). I've been around people like that, been intimately associated with them, because as I've mentioned once or twice before on CE, I'm a former neo-Nazi. I renounced that past, that part of my former self, years ago. So when I see things I recognize from experience as potential warning signs, I tend to get a little cagey about them.

Maybe she deserves the benefit of the doubt. But you know what? I'm happy to let someone else give that to her. Me, I'll pass, thanks.

Not at all.

There's nothing wrong with discussion, indeed that is the very purpose of message boards and why I post here.

You're actually like the most interesting productive user in the topic.

If it's authentic Nazi stuff then sure. I absolutely love everything about WW2 in like a scholar/academic way. If I had the money and means I would definitely have my own collection. A girl that's also into WW2 would be awesome.

tbf that's a real nice ginger

Anyways, just date her, sure. But she knows Wesley, so that's as far as it's gonna go. Also, she said Tennessee. If she'd said Kentucky it might be okay. But she said Tennessee. That's too far South to beat them at anything.

But yeah, would still smash. And let her steal my soul.

She owns Inglorious Basterds, a movie where Hitler is assassinated and his corpse is shot until it starts turning into jelly, so weve dodged her being a Nazi.

Im going to echo other posters and say the fake underwear is a step too far for me, but the overall premise of a history buff isnt a deal breaker.

Before coming to the US, my dad grew up in Communist Poland during the 60s and 70s when there were still craters from the war. Memorabilia like that was relatively easy to find, and there was a treasure trove for sale in flea markets and the like in the 90s after the end of the Cold War. I wish that I was older and could have been there as an adult with money to buy some. I do have a Soviet metal emblem that would be on the front of a soldier or sailors hatlate Communism era, not WWII.

Lemmy collected authentic Nazi items.

Good enough for God, good enough for me.

That being said, keep that shit out of my home. I'm West German.

Nothing specifically wrong with collecting historical artifacts. Like, you could have Atilla the Huns necklace without thinking he was a good guy.
