She's in every way what your perfect girl would be from appearance to personality to career that is until you discover the fact she is a massive history buff and has a passion for collecting WW2 memorabilia especially Nazi memorabilia as a hobby.

You go over to her home, curiosity defeats you and you explore a seemingly random room to find it full of WW2 and Nazi knick-knacks.

"What the hell is this!?" you say aloud

She goes "Oh that's my memorabilia room. I was telling you about my collection. I've been building it since I was a little girl. Look that box has 32 different editions of Mein Kampf, I once wanted to a copy of every single edition but there's so many and they get so expensive that I had to give up, that draw has officer's badges, pins, boxes, war reports, documents, letters home. Some are genuine and some are copies historians made for me. Those are some genuine WW2 rifles, Mauser pistols, uniforms, hats Some of them belonged to officers. I think it's safe to safe to say I have the largest collection from here to Tennessee. "

She lights up excitedly as she shows you the collection.

"Did you know this week in 1941 the Italians fleeing the British in East Africa were on the verge of defeat when they blew up Mussolini bridge and mined the land around it to slow the British down just long enough to escape? I have one of those disarmed mines here, well part of it anyway. Imagine blowing up something named in honor of your leader just to survive. Oh you might like this odd duck here's a replica of Eva Braun's underwear, I couldn't afford the real thing since it cost a fortune, went for over $13,000 at auction so I asked my tailor, a big black British man called Wesley to make an identical match for me using identical materials. You couldn't tell the difference unless you knew exactly what to look for, now that might be cheating but I won't tell anyone if you don't teehee.

And this here is a real Swastika flag taken from the Battle of Berlin, I bought it from a Russian family. They didn't want to sell it at first but when I told them I wasn't a trader, I was a collector they gave it to me for free. Turns our their great grandfather literally just ripped it from some building during the fighting and took it home with him. I guess you could say, they had a Greim time! Hahaha........ they....they had a Greim time....Ya'see Greim was t-... Nevermind sorry. Anyway what do you want for dinner? I was thinking pizza?"

She was the perfect girl until the end of the relationship when all of this shit came out. It's actually a more interesting story than whatever your topic is trying to be but I wont go into it if you're gonna be lame.

Don't you think that's because being interested carries such a stigma? That most people would be too afraid to do it an collect less controversial stuff

I mean tons of people collect war stuff, guys make furniture out of shell casings

If you live in Germany it's flat out illegal to collect this shit

I've probably seen all or most of those WW2 documentaries, so we've got one more thing in common.

I don't necessarily think she's a racist-- there's a ton of German/Nazi stuff that pops up in Anime & JRPGs, and its pretty much always just an 'exotic flavor' there.

As long as she isn't Anti-Semitic (and my perfect girl wouldn't be), then I'm okay with this hobby.

A more serious answer: there's a point where a collection tips over into an obsession -- a fine, blurred grey line where fascination starts to bleed over into empathy. To be honest, it'd be a red flag. I've been acquainted with compulsive collectors of Nazi memorabilia, and if she's ordered custom-made replicas of Eva Braun's undies, this is no longer about the desire to possess a genuine piece of history; it's about something else.

She only ordered a custom made pair because the real thing was $13,000+

are you saying you'd rather she paid that?

I disagree

Choosing identical cheap replicas over forking out a fortune for meaningless "real thing" shows that you care about the collection and history but are not obsessed with it

I think once you're forking over big bucks for things that have identical cheap replicas it's no longer about the history , its because you get off on it.

Sure when the price scales are more even then real is understandable but free vs 2 million dollars for the same thing is a mental obsession
