Mario is Missing

I picked it up as a blind rental thinking it was going to be a low key followup to Super Mario World in which Mario was captured by Bowser and Luigi had to rescue him. I thought it was gonna be a semi-sequel to tide gamers over until the next Mario World release. Instead, it turned out to be a shitty console version of Where is Carmen Sandiego? featuring Mario characters.

And, no, I didn't play it to completion.

Final Fantasy 12. It had a couple decent moments, but overall it was garbage. I did beat it though.

Im a really big Saga Frontier fan so SF2 was slightly disappointing for having a lot less characters and durability, etc but Unlimited Saga was the worst. Its a train wreck. It runs on a vaguely D&D-esque system with slots instead of dice and you have to roll them for everything, even opening chests and doors. They're horribly rigged to explode in your face (especially in the beginning) cause the idea is you get better odds if you have skills like "Lockpicking Lv4".

Characters have little HP, you're supposed to rely on evade. Random battles don't give EXP or gold which makes them not only pointless but a hazard to HP and weapon durability. You get a chance to learn new skills at the end of each chapter and its supposed to be based on what you did (use swords, learn swords, etc) but its completely freaking random instead.

Its just all bad.

A few (dis)honorable mentions though;
Skyward Sword
Fire Emblem Fates & 3 Houses: I was so hype for 3H but the battles aren't fun without weapon triangle and the school is nothing but terrible fetch quests and dailies.

Also, Ni no Kuni 2. I was totally enthralled by the first despite not being big on the combat. When I heard the sequel was going to be action based I was pretty excited, but it seems as if they sacrificed literally every aspect of the series that the first established hoping that revamped combat alone would suffice.

Dark Souls 3. Still enjoyed it and played it though.

But, to see more or less everything done on Dark Souls 2 undone from a gameplay evolution standpoint(granted, not everything should have stayed, versatility/agility can go fuck itself for example) with little to nothing replacing it was rough.

Xenosaga episode 2 and Xenoblade 2 were probably the most dissapointing to me. Was really hyped for both after loving the first games and both sequels were utter shit.

If Dark Souls 2 hadn't been my first Souls game I would have said that. Or if I had played FF12 before FF13 I prob could have said that as well.

Fable.

The first one.

Gah. I was still a young teen at the time and I bought into the hype surrounding it and believed all of Molyneux's bullshit. That's how I learned to ignore the media hyping up a game and set realistic expectations for gaming and its advancements.

That game had a strange effect on me.

I rented it two times and loved it, but when I bought it lost most all its appeal for some reason. Normally if I love a game I love it but this one just went from loved to dud as soon as I owned it.

Banjo Kazooie.

I had played it at a cousin's house(who lived far away, so I only played it that once), and had to have it. It took a couple months of begging my mother for her to agree to get it, and then a couple more months for her to actually both have the money and find a copy at the same time.

During this time, being eight or nine, I had worked it up in my mind to be this apex of gaming, that it would literally change my entire life when I got it. Needless to say, when I finally got it it was an extreme letdown due to my own childlike expectations. Still thought it was great. just wasn't what I had built it up to be.

Now, if we're talking disappointing because the game was subpar, Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced. Still have no idea how they fucked that up so bad. Would have been a great game without the FFT name attached, but they invited us to measure it against one of the greatest games of all time and it just... didn't.

Its not an easy game to love, you have to be fully aware the game is so unfinished; half the plot never made it into the game. The battle system, lore, characters and art are what you have to enjoy while you're getting lost looking for the next plot point and stumbling into a superboss who one shots you.

Honestly, play Alliance Alive (3DS/Switch/Steam) instead. Its the same battle system and a similar world (similar races & magic, etc) with the writer from Suikoden.

Zero Time Dilemma. The game just before it in the series is one of my all-time favorites, so for it to be succeeded by a game with drastically worse writing - even if its overall an above average game - hit me hard.

Final Fantasy 15: it sucked so much that when I got 3/4 through the game, I just couldn't bring myself to finish it. What makes it the most disappointing is that I waited a long time for it to be released and had high expectations for it.

After playing the Duscae demo, I thought they were going to go all out and correct their errors with FF13, and give us the Skyrim of Final Fantasy games, kinda like how God of War was reinvented and became the pinnacle of the series.

Boy was I wrong!

Disappointing from blind expectations? Probably the Crash and Spyro trilogies; mainly because it's not as good as I remember the originals being.

Disappointing because the game is dog shit? NFS 2015.

In both cases, if I'm not enjoying a game, I stop playing it and either trade-in or revisit years later with a clear mind. Simple as that. Why should I play something I don't enjoy when I can play something I do enjoy?

Secret of Mana: Got it because the description of the game sounded interesting to me, but I found the game rather boring, so I never finished it. I'm surprised it got good reviews, tbh. I must be missing something.

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks: Went in expecting it to be better than Phantom Hourglass like people have said, but I didn't like that it had fewer dungeons compared to Phantom Hourglass. Also didn't like traveling by train, collecting bunnies, and collecting stamps. Phantom Hourglass is better, imo.

Metroid Prime Hunters: Felt rather linear and repetitive what with collecting 3 artifacts to fight different versions of the two same bosses, and then rushing back to your ship after collecting each octolith. And the only power-ups you get are new guns, health, missile and ammo expansions.

It was my first RPG-type game, and every time I've played it again, it's worse. The hit detection is frustrating, the spell system's broken, and the AI is a mess. Nostalgia only goes so far.
