Scandinavia and several other European countries?
Norway: While 63,841 men and women were called in for the examination of persons liable for military service in 2012 (mandatory for men), 9265 were conscripted.[5][6] In practice recruits are not forced to serve, instead only those who are motivated are selected.

Sweden: Put a quota for 4,000 conscripts a year. They have 22,500 people in their military actively...

Denmark: "In 2006, 76% of conscripts were volunteers, a number which rose to 99.1% in 2014. The other 0.9% (19 individuals) were forced to serve in the military.

In 2012, the number of conscripts was lowered from 5,000 participants to 4,200 participants. This is being upheld until 2020."

Then people need to do their jobs as parents and teach kids how to behave properly. If the person doesn't have parents then put them in a situation which gives them positive role models. If kids have a positive role model in their lives chances are they won't turn into brats. Not all the time, some kids are just messed up in the head from the start, but having them serve forced time in the military doesn't mean they will turn into good people. There are many military people that end up being just as bad as those that don't serve.

What needed to be done, which is almost impossible now, is tighter laws when it comes to weaponry, and better access to mental health facilities at cheaper costs. Japan from what I've read has arguably the best gun control laws, which only let you have a gun after months of tests and background checks, and you only get access to them if you pass a mental wellness test with a 95 percent. No one can use the weapons except for you, and if you die the gun is repossessed by the country. Obviously would be very difficult for a country like America to implement, due to the difference in size of population but it makes you think about those kinds of things.

Lmao, why am I not surprised at your reaction...

anyway, the truth is that the military would sort out a lot of the perpetual whiners and degenerates of pretty much any country. In fact, this used to be the option that some courts would give, instead of just sending men to prison, but that was decades ago and I dont know if any still do that.

You sort out the "whiners and degenerates" and do... what with them

The military is just a thing. Stop valuing it over other jobs. It's no more appropriate for everyone than brain surgeon or professional race car driver.

Mandatory customer service job is better. You will never be worshiped like the military, people are subconsciously taught that you are "lesser" if you work a job like that.

The job doesn't stroke the ego like military work can for some. I feel like this would humble people better than forced military service which can have significantly more downsides to it(Besides death).

There is literally no reason to be patriotic. "Woo I'm proud that I was lucky to be born on one of the better patches of dirt. Let me act superior over the less fortunate." It's not uniquely American but always illogical.

Yes, and at 33, I wish I could find the time to at least get into the National Guard. Coast Guard would be nice, but that's probably an unrealistic dream for me. I believe 35 is the cut off to join any service, so I need to work hard this year to get my shit together that way I can get in.

I think it was raised to 39 last year.

Nah. As someone who spent years working jobs before enlisting, I'd say the Navy is much better than a lot of other jobs out there.

There's a difference between respecting those who serve and respecting the reason they serve, and I think that flies over many peoples heads. I respect everyone who chooses to put their life on the line, but I don't respect needless death for stuff that is absolutely pointless. Half the wars that are fought are needless just to stroke ones own ego or for things like oil.

Also, forced customer service has its ups and downs. Yes, you are taught to be humble, but that in turn puts bad habits into peoples minds. 90 percent of the managers I've worked for in retail have their heads in their asses. They shouldn't be managers in the first place. For example, I worked one Good Friday(stores are closed, but people still work to clean the store up), and a manager literally had me come into his office to hold open a garbage bag while he put 5 pieces of garbage into it. Another used to talk down to the entire group of cashiers because "she didn't want cashiers to talk to one another when customers weren't around". Yes, its good to be "humble", but not at the cost of your own sanity.

Practically speaking, in my ideal implementation, a sort of nationalized job training program that the state gets something out of too. Service members can learn valuable job skills in various fields. IT, aviation mechanics, nuclear engineering, cybersecurity, policing, electrical engineering, foreign language translation, paralegal work, etc.

I think part of the problem is that discipline training will be really beneficial for some people, but terrible for others. Forcing both groups to do it because it's good for one group is really short-sighted.
