Red Angel 1966 Japanese war film about a nurse on the chinese landscape, they say War is hell and no other films portrays it as well imo.

Black Hawk Down for a realistic portrayal of the sheer chaos of modern combat.
Apocalypse Now for the sheer absurdity of some of the more bizarre situations that can pop up in war.
A Bridge Too Far for the human cost of bad planning.
Gettysburg for being one of the few films to show in great detail one single battle that took place over a series of days.

Oh man, I was thinking about good war movies and almost forgot about this one until I saw this post. This is definitely my absolute favorite. Not a perfect film, but it is beautiful in every way, it was made with an absolutely clear love and devotion to the story it tells (and is astonishingly faithful to its source material), and the score is great.

Its a true a shame Gods and Generals sucked ass and went full Lost Cause with its plot.
