Makes more sense than with actual blades, since a lightsaber's weight is all in the hilt.

It's based off of actual sword stances, which makes sense because the blade of a sword is heavy.

The "blade" of a light saber shouldn't weigh anything and it does not make sense.

There's no upside to it and you lose a large amount of range of motion and control. Only really useful with daggers

There's a whole lot about lightsabers that doesn't make sense when you try to apply the rules of real blades to them.

Stop doing it.

The only way I see it making sense is as a defensive tactic.

Kind of like a wide parry.

Just because light sabers are fantasy doesn't mean we should disregard common sense when using them and holding a light saber towards your body is just stupid and impractical in combat.

Nothing, but technically neither does swinging a lightsaber really hard, and they do that all the time as well.

I'm surprised nobody has accidentally cut anything off holding a lightsaber in a reverse grip like that.

I'm even more surprised the Saber Staff is barely canon

Would've been absolutely perfect for Rey smh

and the developers were like how do we make him even cooler for the sequel? I know! He can duel wield them! And at that point they flew too close to the sun. One Sabre is enough. Two? Now you just look stupid

You already disregard the fact that there's no reason to swing a lightsaber with a lot of force, that it's not beholden to rules regarding a cutting edge or point, etc. None of it is "common sense." It's all nonsense.

They do what they think looks cool, pretty much. The most practical way to use a weapon like that would be to use it like a fencer, but that doesn't look cool.

Saying that it shouldn't matter because they should be fencing anyway doesn't change the fact that holding a light saber towards you is stupid, dangerous and limiting.

So is swinging it like a bladed weapon. If that doesn't strike you as equally stupid, you don't actually know what is stupid and should stop analyzing the whole thing.

Holding and swinging it like a real sword is much less stupid. That's the point. It's about finding a balance of exciting swordplay that doesn't make them look like completely dumb amateurs who don't know how to swing a sword.

Listen, I know what you're saying, but this is exactly what most of this topic sounds like to me.

Is the reverse hold absurd? Yes. Is swinging a lightweight (let alone weightless) sword from over the shoulder also absurd? Yes. It's all absurd, suicidal and pointless.

If you cross blades with one-handed swords that don't have guards, you're doing it so wrong I don't even know where to start.

Right, but a beam of plasma is vastly different than what you would find in traditional swordplay. Imagine if you were in traditional swordplay, but the blades were so sharp they instantly caused severe damage from simply grazing you.

This was not the case in the olden days. You could glance a blow and greatly reduce the damage, and metal blades would glide against each other and hit someone's hand (or the guard. A beam of plasma for a sword would likely have quite a bit of friction to it due to the extreme heat.

So if you lightsaber duelists are engaged, and they both happen to go for a wild swing, it makes sense for them to hold the sabers against each other for the "cinematic effect". If one tries to simply step away, they will most likely be hit by their opponent because it leaves them temporarily wide open.

You don't realize just how fast Jedi and Sith, or Force Users in general are supposed to be moving due to the Force. They are basically moving at what we would call lightning speed if we could observe it. It's why they're able to block laser blasts.

But anyways, a heavy hand and strong arm muscles would be very useful in a lightsaber fight. It's why Darth Vader was so unstoppable.

Yeah I know. I'm just saying his stupid reverse grip further exposes him.

There should be a balance between coolness and being practical.

In most of the EU material, moving an ignited lightsaber does have more resistance than moving just the handle by itself (for various reasons). Whether you should regard the EU material at all though is a fair question.
