Looks like some generic show about some chubby kid with a harem of waifu alien girls? Or is there more to it?

No that covers it. It was mostly made famous by the atrocious fanbase.

I watched it for a little bit when it first premiered since it's a cute show with a lot of whimsy.
But yeah then the fanbase latched onto it, the studio noticed, and they just fucking ran with it.

I think a lot of the SJW crowd jumped on too, cuz characters can merge with others, which can change their gender and stuff, since they thought that magically turned it into some sort of progressive masterpiece.

Its fun for a kids' show, and regularly explores ambitious concepts you wouldn't expect a kids' show - or indeed many adult shows - to explore in such depth, or with like, music and shit.

I think that about covers it.

I think it's more because almost all of the characters with any power are female and fusion is treated almost as a metaphor for sex, or at least physical intimacy, and a lot implied lesbian glorification. Particularly between Ruby and Sapphire and Pearl and Rose Quartz.

I've only seen some of the show, but my wife loves it and watches every episode.

It's a fun, uplifting show that doesn't shy away from confronting really difficult issues and handling them very well. The show explores themes of being yourself, relationships(healthy and unhealthy), destiny(or lack thereof), dealing with loss, the fallibility of parents and leaders, etc. etc.
We are currently in the midst of Steven Universe Future, which is a sequel series set after the movie(itself set after the end of the original series).
Oh, and the fights tend to be cool.

i stopped watching a while ago but god garnet was fine as hell

it has average animation but the color palette is really nice and the characters are all likable

This, also, season 1 is pretty much an entirely different show from the other seasons. IMO, I'd rank the seasons like:
3>2>5>1>>>>>4 (Future is ongoing, so I'm witholding my opinion on it until it's done)

Over the years I have avoided many programs. When Steven Universe first premiered I wasn't really aware of it as I didn't have a channel that aired it. I recalled seeing pictures on Google Images one time. Not sure what I was looking up and saw Garnet among other things. Pictures alone made me think there was nothing to the show.

In January 2017 a couple of my friends introduced me to the show and by episode 35 of S1 I was hooked. Luckily the show was already in S4 by that point so I kept watching more and more. I couldn't get enough. It's one of my favorite programs now. I'll admit though many parts of the first season are hit and miss. Steven himself I found to be a very annoying character early on, but his development over the series changed my mind.

Some say the program has a bad fan base. I have yet to see this for myself. It seems more like the ones who dislike the show are far worse.

Anyway I highly recommend it.
