I'm sorry is the 1% a company I've never heard of or something?

I honestly kind of like a proposal I heard a few years ago about imposing a limit on how large the difference can be between the best and worst paid employee. It's not perfect, but after thinking about it a little bit, it sounds better than the traditional minimum wage solution.

Now the cap would still be something like 100 times but you could find an hourly equivalent by dividing by 2000 (even though many salaried employees work a lot more than that) but it means that if the CEO is making $20M, the janitor is making $100/hr. Or more realistically, the janitor is making $20/hr and the CEO is making $4M, since you know, there are a lot more janitors in the company than CEOs.

Of course, then you would see a lot of companies contract out their unskilled labor, but even that has a nice silver lining since contract labor generally comes at a premium. Now better janitors can compete for better wages.

If you make more than $30,000/yr you are the 1%.

People tend to forget that there is an entire world that exists outside of America.

And there's a guy in India willing to do it for less than $1 a day

to play the devil's advocate, with respect to base pay the highest paid ceos seldom actually exceed 5m, and it's far less for most (e.g., 80k salary for bezos)

the gains in wealth for billionaires and successful executives tend to reflect increases in the valuation of business holdings over time

pushing for greater availability of stock options for lower level employees would not be a bad idea though, since cash is intrinsically worthless, especially in the long term; stock options also create a vested interest in the long-term well-being of the company so long as they're held

Nor do they set aside time for meetings with staff to find out what needs to be upgraded, because you know.... that would actually prove that you give a shit about your staff.

People often like to claim that people doing basic low skill jobs aren't worth much in wages and that they should just skill up and move on. But unless the job was some kind of make work thing, what they were doing still needs to be done by someone. You might claim that they are getting what they are worth, but what about the people at the top? Amazon is owned by one of the wealthiest men in the world, yet it treats its warehouse workers like slaves, gives them terrible working conditions, and pays them next to nothing. Their customer service has been outsourced to the 3rd world where they pay pennies for the service. Boeing's CEO ran the business in such a way that over 300 people ended up dead, but instead of going to jail, he is walking away with millions after being fired.

It's all complete bullshit.

You'd think that large corporations would be all for raising minimum wage since it effectively prices small companies out of the market and puts them in everlasting dominance.

And for folks that say if a company cant afford to pay it then they shouldn't exist, well make nice with your corporate overlords because they'll never go anywhere and we are doomed to be subject to their benevolence.

Small ones don't matter now anyway. Wal-Mart gives zero craps what a mom and pop store are doing. They care about other mega corps like Amazon and Target.
Amazon and Walmart in particular came from pretty much nothing by being competitive in prices/service. There's no opportunity for that to be replicated if they jack up minimum wage to price out any future uprisings. Competition benefits the consumer more than anyone.

If the job sucks, you are going to have to keep the pay competitive enough so that you will have workers willing to do the job.

You can't live in a country that wants to get rid of the immigrants then doesn't want to pay it's citizens a fair wage either.

Also, inflation kind of forces wages up since literally everything is going up in price except pay.

The argument one might use here is, if you get rid of the immigrants who do the work for cheaper wages, then the wages will rise out of necessity to meet a level that citizens are willing to work them for.

That is, the wages are kept low by cheap imported labor and if the citizens who demand a higher wage are the only employable option, then the wages will rise without needing to raise the minimum wage.

and Wal-Mart refuses to meet provincial standards. My buddy was making 11.75 back when the minimum wage was 10 dollars an hour. When they upped the minimum wage in the province, he still make 11.75, instead of being bumped up to 13.50.

It's simple. "better jobs" can offer more money, better benefits, etc, while "unskilled jobs" should at least pay a livable wage without having to work 7 days a week and pull doubles
The problem atm is that some people are doing specialized or skilled work for min wage or something as flimsy and useless in non-established start ups as equity

Mom and Pop stores should be exempt from the 15$-an-hour idiocy.

Bezos doesn't host meetings with more than 8 people, because he's too cheap to buy more than 2 pizzas for board meetings (2 slices per person).

If you stop illegal immigration, you won't have people content with being hired at below-minimum wages.
