idk if we had a topic like this. i know @Parappa09 did one for TV shows and probably has some good contributions for this too...

anyway, on the back of some quick research and in no particular order i'd say my top 5 is:

  • the favourite (this came out on 1 January here so it counts )
  • midsommar
  • ad astra
  • marriage story
  • burning (this only got a non festival release in europe in 2019 iirc)

some honourable mentions:

  • toy story 4 (I love this!)
  • booksmart
  • the irishman (extremely well made and entertaining but a part of me doesn't love it with other stuff this year)
  • knives out (just a really well made film that twists some well worn tropes around in a highly entertaining way)

def missing some stuff here but w/e

for sure bro, in no particular order...

  • avengers: endgame purely because its the end of me being a hyper fan of MCU and the 22 films cumulated in a great ending for me
  • booksmart because of the refreshing take on youth, awkwardness and figuring out your place in life
  • joker, which is a controversial one. i really felt uncomfortable watching a lot of it, but also sided with arthur
  • marriage story, basically because anything adam driver is in turns to gold and it was a lot more entertaining than i thought it would be
  • either hustlers, the favourite (likewise came out in 2019 here) or apollo 11. tough to choose since theyre all different but great films but im gonna side with my gal olivia colman

bearing in mind i havent seen parasite, midsommar, knives out or the lighthouse yet

Parasite is my favorite from the year. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood might be my second. Irishman was great too. I'm looking forward to Uncut Gems and I just bought Lighthouse so I'll be checking that out too soon.

I haven't seen joker at all. Fully intended to but got sooo sick of the joker discourse that I feel I was already burnt out on it by that stage.

Similarly, ouatih...really hated hateful eight and just feel tired of Tarantino at this stage. Will prob watch both at some point but not rushing to do so.

Prob just gonna wait for the lighthouse to properly release next year to see it but hear its really good. Same goes for parasite

I plan on doing a giant ranking of all the films I watched in 2019 after New Years, but as of right now, in no particualr order, my top 5 is probably:

Parasite
Marriage Story
Joker
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
The Art of Self-Defense

Maybe replace the last one with Knives Out, but it's super fucking close.

idk why exactly. i like taika waititi so i think i should be able to give him the benefit of the doubt on it but everything i see and read about it just makes me roll my eyes a bit. it just seems a bit contrived and reliant on the obvious 'shock' (for lack of a better word) value more than anything

I have watched 450 movies this year. About 122 of those were released in 2019. With that being said, I still haven't seen most of the best reviewed movies yet. I probably won't have my best of 2019 list done until the Oscars.

As of right now:

Parasite
Endgame
Far From Home
Brightburn
JoJo Rabbit

That list will change a lot in the coming weeks.

What shock value? Its a heartwarming and sad movie that just happens to take place in Nazi Germany. Theres black comedy but its not just crazy stuff for the sake of being crazy

for what it's worth, the movie took a totally different angle from what I expected from the trailers

@billcom6

How damn dude, I thought I'd seen a lot of 2019 movies at 52.

Do you have AMC A-List or something? That's the only reason I've even seen as many as I have, I cant imagine paying full price for 100+ movies in theaters. (Unless you're just watching mainly Netflix and other streaming films)

It's not remotely about shock value. The movie is about so much more than the trailers, and likely a part of why I enjoyed it so much.

again, shock value is probably not the right word. i guess i mean more that the film is selling itself as this brash, daring satire and yet in reality i've seen it widely suggested that the satirical element is somewhat toothless and the film is almost like a romcom for large parts of it.

I download (wink) a lot of movies, plus streaming services. I have probably seen about 10-15 movies in the theater this year. My local theater (which sucks) is only $5 so that's nice as well.
When it comes to how I watch so many movies. I am a teacher and I am off all summer and all I do is watch movies.

Ah, gotcha. I wish I'd been able to watch more movies this year, but work kept me busy. I was only able to watch maybe 3-5 per week.

At least I was able to catch most of the big indie and critic-loved movies I wanted to see that came out this year, so that was nice. Still need to see Ford V Ferrari, Bombshell, Little Women, Honey Boy, Dark Waters, and Richard Jewell, so many movies came out at once this past month and this is my busiest time of year, so I just havent been able to catch those yet, and Honey Boy and Dark Waters are already out of theaters. :/

See I haven't seen any of those yet either and I won't make my Top of 2019 until I see basically everything, so probably not till the Oscars.

I need to for sure at least see Little Women and Ford V Ferrari before I make my end of the year list; I honestly might skip Richard Jewell, like, it looks good, but doesn't really seem like my cup of tea.

I think I'd have fucking loved Honey Boy, so I'm sad I didn't get to catch that in theaters. I'll have to wait till it gets on Amazon now.
