New Zealand authorities have said their country will be a safer place after owners handed in more than 50,000 guns during a buyback programme following a ban on assault weapons.
The government banned the most lethal types of semi-automatic weapons less than a month after a gunman killed 51 worshippers at two Christchurch mosques in March.
Police then launched a six-month programme to buy the newly banned weapons from owners.

The buyback ended at midnight on Friday, with gun collection events staying open late as police reported in a last-minute surge.
Provisional figures indicate 33,000 people handed in 51,000 guns, and another 5,000 weapons as part of a parallel amnesty in which owners could hand over any type of firearm without any questions being asked but without getting compensated.

Look how actual first world, civilised countries solve their violence issues. This is admirable.

Seeing as the rate at which mass gun attacks happen in New Zealand in the first place and how small the population is there, the chances of another one happening anytime soon is incredibly slim. But hey, if Gamefaqs is still around in the next 20-30 years and another mass attack hasn't happened, you feel free to remind me of this post and I'll admit to being wrong. Just for you.

Less than 30%, sounds to me like there are still plenty of free persons in NZ.

That's not even 30% of the known firearms in that country, let alone the unknown firearms.

This is not a success at all. The majority of gun owners did not give up their guns and the people who were gonna commit crimes with them definitely won't care about this law. This hurts only the law abiding citizens.

Any numbers on gun sales during this period? You could just trade in some old, worn out gun via buyback and use that $ to cover at least a fraction of the cost for a newer gun.

Which pretty much means that the government is going to do everything in their power to try and not pay you for your guns if they don't have to.
