A North Carolina sheriff suspended a deputy who was caught on tape violently slamming a middle school student onto the floor, twice, officials said.

The troubling incident happened at Vance County Middle School, about 45 miles north of downtown Raleigh, with the school reporting it to district officials on Thursday.

School surveillance video showed the Vance County sheriff's deputy walking down a hallway with a child before he suddenly picks up the youngster and throws him to the ground, NBC affiliate WRAL showed.

Moments later, the deputy picks up the prone child from the ground and slams him to the floor again, the footage shows.

"We are aware of the incident that occurred at Vance County Middle School involving a school resource officer," the district said in a statement. "We are deeply concerned by the actions that took place. School and district officials are working closely and in full cooperation with the local authorities to address this matter consistent with school board policy and state laws."

Vance County Sheriff Curtis Brame said he was thinking of his own grandchildren as he watched the video.

"I was stunned, I was shocked," Brame told WRAL. "To see a child that small reminded me of one of my grandchildren."

Brame has brought in the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation to conduct the probe.

The deputy was placed on paid leave pending the investigation.

"This is a use-of-force case," Vance County District Attorney Mike Waters said. "I've been able to assure the family that this (investigation) is being conducted appropriately."

Sheriff Brame said he was not aware of any previous complaints about this deputy. It also wasn't clear what the child might have said or done leading up to the body slams, but Brame said.

The child, who is under 12, has a bump on his head from the incident but was not hospitalized, his mother said.

Paid leave for a video showing a deputy assaulting a child in school. Great system protecting shitty cops from actual consequences.

The only reason they give them paid vacations is because if he fired him for this and it later came out that the officer had some obscure but legally justifiable reason for this and he got fired for it, then he can bring suit against the PD. Putting them on desk duty or on paid suspension is how the process is designed.

It looks fucked but it makes sense within the context of how things work

I wonder if the "rule of law" has ever applied to police officers ever or if it's a relatively new thing.

He should have been fired immediately, and arrested. There is no additional context that would justify what happened in that video, whatsoever. It doesn't matter what the student said.

He'll get a slap on the wrist. Fired and rehired at another police department at worst.

He got fired now.

HENDERSON, N.C. -- A sheriff's office in North Carolina has fired a school resource officer seen on surveillance video violently slamming a middle school student to the ground twice and then dragging the child off camera.

The unidentified deputy was fired Monday, Vance County Sheriff Curtis Brame told WTVD-TV. The officer had been on paid administrative leave since the video was reported last week. No charges against the deputy have been announced.

Authorities haven't named the student but the sheriff said the child is under the age of 12.

The North Carolina Bureau of Investigation has been called to look in to the situation, which happened at Vance County Middle School about 45 miles (70 kilometers) north of Raleigh.

I haven't read the entire OP, but I'm sure my fellow North Carolinian deputy was suspended with paid leave and will be quietly reinstated without so much as a literal slap on the wrist once everything quiets down.

Police make it so hard to defend them. It's like they want to be hated.

He got fired after being suspended on paid leave. So far no charges and no telling if he'll just get hired at a different location.

Yeah, I just read the rest of the topic. Being simply fired still isn't good enough, charges ought to be applied here.

Another Update

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/deputy-who-slammed-n-c-middle-school-student-floor-fired-n1103211

A North Carolina school resource officer seen on video slamming a middle school student twice on the ground has been fired from the sheriff's department and charged with assault, officials said.

Vance County sheriff's deputy Warren Durham faces charges of misdemeanor assault on a child under 12, misdemeanor child abuse and willful failure to discharge duties related to his employment with the sheriff's office, the county's prosecutor said Tuesday.

Oh and apparantly this ain't even the first time.

https://abc11.com/sro-who-slammed-student-charged-with-child-abuse/5762144/

In addition to the surveillance video, another parent at the school said the same officer pushed her daughter into a locker.

"Took her to the emergency room," Roslyn Wynn said. "She has a dislocated shoulder, on her left side. Everything where she was slammed against the locker - all of this is broke. This is like, dislocated. She has a sling on. She has a sprain in her neck."

School district leaders said they are now investigating that incident too.
