If you think they should have let the robbers go then fine, but realize that a vast majority of people would disagree with you.

I would be willing to bet that the majority of people's opinion on the matter would directly correlate to their own (and their loved ones) distance from the shooting.

Hypothetical: If I was driving a car that one of the cops was hiding behind and started drawing fire and I got the fuck out of there because my niece is in the back seat and the cop ends up dying because he lost cover, would I be in trouble?

The reason police exist is because they are understood to "protect and serve" the community, even if is passively. If they let the robbers go because the robbers surround themselves with civilians, theoretically the robbers could avoid the police indefinitely. It isn't realistic to expect the police to follow the robbers without taking action for hours until the time is right. That would cost a lot of money and would be deemed as inefficient. Then add on the fact that the robbers are driving recklessly and have no regard for the lives of innocents, it makes sense to close them in. When they are closed in, the robbers start shooting at the police and it leads to a shootout until the robbers are eventually killed.

It's one thing to criticize the one cop for not being regretful of the hostage being killed, it's another to blame the police for what happened.

Right so...
1. A helicopter was following them and they were in an easily recognizable ups truck. They weren't going to lose them.
2. The reason the truck was driving so dangerously and that shootout happened was because cops were chasing them. They weren't just driving around shooting random people and shit...they had stolen jewels and were trying to get away. This is why cops sometimes call off chases if it's getting too risky.

I understand that they had a hostage but why not call off the ground chase, keep the chopper nearby, then plan something safer? That's what their leadership is for and what they're paid and trained to do..yes?
Throw down some spike strips, block off a road and surround them, whatever you gotta do. Then instead of rushing them..get a fucking megaphone or some shit and try to negotiate the release of the hostage. They start shooting at you? Then stay behind your own vehicles and only return fire if they start rushing at you or you know you have a clear shot without hitting the hostage. Sure, it's more work but it would have saved the life of the innocent bystander and perhaps even the life of the hostage. For the people saying they would have taken more hostages, why the hell would they have done that? Lol They were trying to get away, not gather an army of hostages to have to manage and keep under control, thus slowing them down. Lol

I was a cop for 12 years, we are trained to get behind the front and rear quarter panels. Maybe in your area the cars get rhino liner sprayed in the door as extra padding but I can tell you for a fact most cop cars dont have bulletproof doors.
