The fact that you can see them now, compared to prior generations where they're these invisible stats that you need to make charts and graphs of them in order to even understand - it's great.

I'm also personally glad that there isn't like a whole post-game storyline, because my favorite part of Pokemon games have traditionally been to trigger the credits and catch some Pokemon without any looming business to go back to. I will say that the legendary stuff felt really rushed, and if they were going to incorporate legendaries into the story I would have preferred something a little more in depth, but for the most part I like that the game stops at the credits and lets you loose to catch all the Pokemon you can get.

If any of that above paragraph seems insane or ass-backwards to you, my favorite Pokemon game is Emerald (where I didn't really care about the Battle Frontier), and I stopped with the series after Pokemon Platinum (partially because the post-game was a giant pain in the ass in the way it goes straight back to railroading you through a bunch of story at the part where I'm used to running wild). Pokemon is a credits-game for me - I will engage in some sort of post-game, like catching all the Pokemon, but my primary enjoyment of the title is just in getting to the credits. Never cared for nerd shit like IVs or competitive battling, just make me the Champion and let me catch some Pokemon.

But with the IV checker, I want to make some strong Pokemon and make a second team. I want to flog the Battle Tower with a Linoone, Flygon and Gardevoir team with perfect IVs, I want to play against people online! A lot of the shit I used to avoid the fuck out of, I'm thriving on.

Because using an IV calc when you caught a fresh poke was so hardcore.

Gen 4 is when I started to learn about IVs and EVs. I used to just use the medicines like protein and zinc to boost stats, rather than EV train. But it never really clicked with me until Gen 6 where I got into breeding and competitive, and learned how to make the stats more efficient.

I thought they got rid of IVs?

But also, you could see them in gen 7, though I think that was postgame.

When they really streamlined the breeding process in Gen 6 was when I got hooked. Glad to see they're doing more things now like Mints and Bottle Caps.

IVs and EVs completely ruined Pokemon for me when I found out about them. I couldn't just play casually and level them however anymore, I had to try to optimize them, and it sucked a lot of the fun out of the games.

I always thought it was weird that you were meant to bond with your Pokemon and everything, but they'd almost always suck compared to Pokemon you've bred for the right natures and IVs, and trained to get the right EVs. Completely went against the theme of the games IMO.

Agreed. Im kinda tempted to get into breeding but I do feel it runs counter to the concept of the individual Pokmon being your buddies, your partners, that you nickname and hang out with. Hell, this is still present in camping, them following you around in Lets Go, and friendship ratings. IV/EVs and breeding lean a bit too much into the undercurrent of dogfighting for my childhoods tastes lol

Pretty sure you could see IVs in S/M as well.

They should get rid of all the randomness altogether. X/Y took a step in the right direction by making 5 IVs inheritable.

I went through that for a bit, but pokemon showdown made me come around. Too bad gen 7 sucked.

Do you know why I'm thriving on this shit?

I didn't need to follow a guide. I looked some stuff up, but there was never an obligation - I wasn't a slave to external sources and tools. I knew IVs were viewable in this game, I have a basic understanding of this side of things that I never really touched on, and there's not too much endgame to pull me too thin.

Training IVs in this game is akin to cloning Pokemon in Pokemon Crystal and Emerald. It's a fun little side activity that you can get lost in, something that you need to stray off the beaten track to get to. Mind you, it's an integrated gameplay feature and not a potentially game-ruining bug, but it's scratching the same area of my brain as cloning.

Whoever said this shit was easy mode - who cares, it's actually fun. It's not some ivory tower shit that only the greasiest neckbeards pour hundreds of hours in.

I get those same feelings of unease knowing what I'm catching is suboptimal. Not any more though, since you can fix bad natures and IVs on any Pokemon. The only change I'd make is to allow bottle caps to be used on any fully evolved Pokemon instead of every level 100 Pokemon. Or maybe just lower it from 100 to 50, since there are reasons people don't want to evolve some pokemon.

IV are a stat that you can see now?

When you beat the game, you can view IVs in your Pokemon's status screen. They don't give you exact numbers 0-31, but instead verbal descriptions ("worst" "ok" "good" etc. I forgot all of them). It turns out having exact numbers doesn't really matter, though. If it's a perfect 31, the game says it's "best" and that's all I really need to know. I don't really care if an IV is 16 vs 18.

I don't trust the numbers can let me to victory. Yeah u can have all the perfect EV in the world but there's more into battling pokemon than worrying something trivial like IV numbers and what not
