Okay...
So Chadtronic (he does a lot of gaming stuff and other stuff, but most of it is aimed at older people, not entirely for kids) just released this video update on the COPPA bullshit from the FTC.
Apparently the situation is much, MUCH worse than everyone thinks.

Long story short: Marking Not For Kids for your videos does NOT protect you from getting fined $42,000.
According to the FTC guidelines, something like Rick & Morty (which is NOT meant for kids) can be considered "for kids" with what the FTC considers videos aimed at kids.
What the fuck! For fuck's sake, SOUTH PARK (which is NOT for kids) is considered a kids thing under FTC COPPA rules.

Bassically, the FTC officially declares animation of all types to be only for kids. So, how do video games with their animated graphics fall under this? That's the $42,000 mystery question (especially as the FTC continues to reveal more absurd and vague shit):

TLDR version: the FTC is about to Thanos snap the shit out of ALL of Youtube.

Chadtronic video (he actually put in actual footage of FTC officials talking and explaining their shit... and they explain their shit in the most shitty way possible):

This is huge. This won't just affect indie content creators...there's official Youtube channels like Nintendo, Disney, Square-Enix, Capcom, etc that will be affected by this. And I can imagine getting huge fines just for uploading videos of their upcoming games just because they weren't compliant are sure to anger some CEOs. And at the end of the video linked he brought up an excellent point: this is just going to scare people to either stop using Youtube and other streaming websites, or make their videos as obviously mature as possible so they won't get fined for an incorrect "not for kids" label. The more mature content out there, the easier it is for kids to find it, combined with the fact that videos labeled "for kids" have up to 90% of their revenue cut, cannot have comments, cannot show up on recommended lists, cannot show up through searches...it just doesn't work. This new regulation doesn't help anybody, not even the kids it's supposedly trying to protect.

You can leave a public comment here expressing your opinion on COPPA before it comes into affect January 1st. Try to make it as civil as you can. I did my part.

Yeah. It was originally going to be revised in 2023 but they are doing it early because they're getting complaints from parents about "inappropriate for kids" content on Youtube.

This just makes me pissed that more and more parents are using Youtube as a babysitting tool and not, you know, actually doing their job as parents. This is ruining it for everybody that makes online content, not just Youtube.

For real. I actually witnessed this with my best friend and his 4 year old. He actively forced YouTube on his kid so we could go hang. I was uncomfortable EVERY time I came over.

Sucks a few lazy bad eggs are going to ruin online content making for everyone else.

Those companies you mentioned except Disney are Japanese. This is an American law, so I doubt the fines will be able to apply to them, especially since Japan has laws against foreigners fucking with their stuff.

Can Youtube just close channels of huge companies like that? Closing the channel of some random foreign Youtuber is one thing, but giants like Capcom, Square-Enix and Nintendo?

It is their site. If you wont follow the rules dictated by American laws, then they can close your channel.

Will that apply to Pewdiepie, their biggest star and a Swede currently living in the UK? Because them having to close Pewdiepie's channel because of that would pretty much be a death blow to the site.

Not following US laws would be the death of their site, so yes, they would have to close his account if he fails at following COPPA after some reminders.

No, South Park is not considered to be for kids under FTC guidelines. No, not all animation is considered to be for kids under FTC guidelines.

YouTube might be overreaching in how they apply the guidelines, but that's not coming from the FCC.

https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/blogs/business-blog/2019/11/youtube-channel-owners-your-content-directed-children

Second, just because your video has bright colors or animated characters doesnt mean youre automatically covered by COPPA. While many animated shows are directed to kids, the FTC recognizes there can be animated programming that appeals to everyone.

I read the whole thing and this is becoming increasingly apparent that this whole thing was just fear-mongering. I made this topic back when I first learned about it but have done my research since then.
