That's fair, I dont pay attention to GO at all.

Outside of that it gets very little attention so I feel like it still has to be towards the top of the forgettable list.

I just did the sporcle quiz again and I failed to remember Tentacool/Tentacruel (even while telling myself it was likely a poison and/or water type), with Drowzee/Hypno being my final guess several minutes after everything else. Tentacool seems weird to forget, considering how overwhelmingly common it was in the early games...

For whatever reason, I almost always forget the Meowth line until near the end. Am I the only one? If not for the anime, I wouldn't be surprised if it had ended up being among the forgotten. It's never felt that prominent in the games and Persian really fits the 'it's just an animal' vibe of so many Gen I Pokemon.

It's Ponyta for me. The lesser of the three two-line Fire types in Gen I, imo. Although I often forget Pinsir too, and when I do, I remember how ugly its Mega is and I consciously try to forget it again.

Tangela and Lickitung are the two that come to mind for me.

The anime reminds me of Krabby/Kingler
Horsea/Seadra has Kingdra but on their own they're pretty forgettable. Dewgong and Lorelei go hand in hand with me

Tauros/Kangaskhan/Farfetch'd/Mr. Mime are all regionals in Pokemon Go so they're pretty memorable.

I personally remember Dewgong because Pokewars is obnoxious about backing it in every pokemon contest, but objectively it's a reasonable answer

Rhyhorn/Rhydon offer nothing of interest to the generation.

I really think they would be the easy answer here without Kingdra. So many water types in gen I, only available through fishing - but getting an evolution and having that evolution be the only new Dragon in Gen 2 did wonders. They would otherwise have to be less memorable than Krabby/Kingler, right?

Rhydon is also notable for being the first pokemon ever.

The substitute animation clearly uses it as what is subbing in for your pokemon as well.

Also has the whole AIM FOR THE HORN meme if your going by Anime presence

Yea I still believe Krabby/Kingler.

They are bottom 5 both on the Sporcle Quiz. No one important or memorable uses them in any game. They are caught late in RBY and GSC and by RSE there are a billion more Water Pokemon you can fish. They are not that strong, they never received any love with a new Evolution.

Pinsir, Tangela, Slowpoke/Slowbro, Horsea/Seadra, Cubone/Marowak are likely the other contenders.

I'm still confused why people don't seem to want to accept it's Lickitung.

It finished last in the Sporcle quiz by over a point even to the Exeggs which are easy to not spell correctly.

If we're considering the world over, it's not Krabby/Kingler since he's a meme in Japan because of Kingler's name being "club"

EDIT: Though really even if not considering the world over, said meme brought Kingler into the spotlight recently since people thought he might be getting a Galar form/evo because of said meme being all over the Pokemon Club website.

Farfetch'd name basically keeps it out of the running

In fact. Any pokemon with a name that is extremely close to what it is (like seel, ponyta, etc) are also probably out simply because it's easier to associate the pokemon with the real thing.

It's also not like really fair to just eliminate things for media appearance because the original 151 has been around for over 20 years and all have had a lot of times to just be in things.

I'd bet that a lot of like middle evolutions of three tiers are also remembered by association with their more popular first or third forms. With some exceptions of course.

Yeah but that follows conventional Pokmon nameisms. The reason the Exeggs are tough to remember the spelling of is because one has a c that isnt always apparent and its easy to forget which one it is. Lickitung is exactly as it sounds and there are only so many ways to type it. Theres no awkward extra letters there, so I dont buy it being tough to spell moving it very much. People just dont remember it because its a normal Pokmon that is rare to find in the game to begin with.
