Board 8 > How would they do in a contest? Day 157 ft Marty McFly, Fortune, Lord Voldemort

This is a topic to rate the contest strength of potential newcomers in the current contest environment.

I will pick the characters to rate and discuss for each day from user nominations - whoever the 3 most nominated characters are at that time. If there are more than 3 I will pick randomly. You can nominate any number of characters at any time, but you cannot nominate the same character twice.

All characters who were present in the 2018 Character Battle will NOT be eligible. Otherwise you can nominate any character that has appeared in video games; even comic book characters. This will exclude real-life athletes who have only appeared in long running sports series, however I will accept those who have their own games such as Shaq. I will accept nominations for iconic gaming duos too, if there is a compelling reason for both characters to be linked (either co-starring in a game ala Banjo & Kazooie, or always appearing together like Callie & Marie from Splatoon).

Each day will have a separate topic, and nominations will carry over. As far as actually rating the character's contest strength; I ask that users rank a characters potential strength with one of the following qualifiers - LAW Fodder, Low Fodder, Mid Fodder, High Fodder, Fodder Line, Low Midcarder, Midcarder, High Midcarder, Near Elite, Elite, LAW Tier (capable of beating Link). I will average all the ratings given to a character to come up with their final ranking. I have included a highlighted entrant from Character Battle X on each tier of the strength rankings below, to provide a baseline for each.

Note that LAW Fodder is meant to be a tier reserved for the weakest possible characters to put into a contest. A character will only be placed there if at least 3/4ths of the voters for that day agree on the LAW Fodder rating, and no ratings above Low Fodder are given. If either of those conditions are not met, the character will not be eligible for the LAW Fodder tier.

Marty McFly Mid Fodder. He's slightly weaker than Doc Brown, yet still recognizable enough to beat Low Fodder. I have no confidence he could beat anyone else, however.

Fortune: Low Fodder. I've never heard of this character, and because MGS has spiraled downward, I don't think a one-off villain from a game that's almost 20 y/o is going to do particularly well especially now that people don't care about her franchise. The fact that she's never made a bracket is something, right?

Voldemort Fodder Line. "HE WHO MUST NOT BE NAMED" memes are sure to pop up, and I think that he could be the strongest Harry Potter character not named Harry (it's either him, Hagrid, or Hermione). A lot of nerds have fond memories of the Potter franchise, even though probably not through the video games, and that's going to boost the Dark Lord's chances quite a bit. He'd advance with a good draw, I think, but I have no way of knowing. I for one don't care much about Harry Potter anymore, and I presume I can't be the only.

Marty is Mid Fodder for many of the same reasons as Doc. Everyone knows his name and he is an icon of the 80s, plus the BTTF films are likely popular on the site.

Fortune I honestly have no idea on. She seems like she'd be somewhat memorable and she's attractive, so I'll say Mid Fodder for now.

Voldemort I say is Mid Fodder as well. He is an iconic villain in the same vein as Palpatine, but lacks the memes that the latter has. I don't see Gfaqs particularly caring for him, though he at least has a memorable name.

I legit have no idea how to discern how popular a Harry Potter character will be here. We haven't had a Harry Potter poll since 2011, and I only see occasional topics on the subject on this board (and they tend not to get many posts). But beyond this board, on the greater site, I legit have no idea.

I'll drop my Voldemorrt vote to High Fodder for now but I think there's some definite nostalgia there.

Marty McFly: Mid Fodder - I think he'll be a bit stronger than Doc Brown due to being the main protagonist and audience surrogate, but it's not going to be by enough to get him in a higher tier.

Fortune: Low Fodder - To be fair, though, there's a lot of Metal Gear characters competing for a finite amount of nominations. Psycho Mantis hasn't made a contest before, yet he should have some strength, and Liquid Snake failed to reach a field of 243 back in 2013.

Voldemort: Mid Fodder - He should be weaker than Palpatine, and we probably overrated Harry Potter a bit way back when.
