We're still short staffed, so we've been having to work long/odd hours. He only works 3rd shift, simply because it's his preferred shift. There's no reason he's on a set schedule outside of it just being a courtesy to him.

Meanwhile my shift swings around between 3rd on his days off, and both first and second shifts the other days, my shifts last 12-16 hours because I'm splitting the day with the only other employee here. Just this past weekend I had to pull a 12 hour overnight shift, was off 8, came back in for 12 hour 2nd shift, off 8, then was back in for a first shift the next day. I live 40 minutes away, those 8 hours between shifts were very short and it was rough to deal with. I've also been getting called in early, and made to stay late... That's how things have been since I started a month ago, getting loads of overtime just to have all the shifts covered while he just works his regular shift.

So, this week's schedule rolls out, and it has him working a single second shift following him getting 2 days off(3 actually since he leaves at 7am Thursday and doesn't come back till 3pm Sunday). As soon as he saw it he started throwing a tantrum "this shit ain't gonna fly" and "it's unfair to have to me work then because I won't get enough rest" then "just why the hell am I expected to work this this?" He immediately started pressuring me to switch with him so he'd get his 3rd shift back and once again put me only getting 8 hours off between my shifts(which is really only 6 since I live so far). I told him I'd think about it, so he went to my manager and told her that I wanted to switch with him. She asked me yesterday, and I told her no that I didn't. I explain the situation and she gets upset because she only swapped our shifts as a favor to me so I wouldn't have to be right back to work with just 8 hours between, and said that its his schedule and I don't have to switch if I don't want to.

So then he comes in last night and turns out he made plans to go out of town with his friend Sunday and won't be back until too late to be at work on second so I "have" to switch with him. Today is my day off, but I have to go back in for a mandatory meeting anyway and he said he's gonna tell her he's not available to work that shift since he made plans.

The more I think about it the angrier I get, not because of the schedule exactly, but because if the principle of it, and that he thinks he deserves special treatment, and how he made plans knowing he was scheduled to work just to try and weasel out of it.

Plus, I have a feeling if I refuse he'll threaten to quit. Without him there'll just be 2 of us and we'd have to pull 12 hours shifts 7 days per week till someone else came along and both me and the other employee are relatively new.

I knew him in high school, and from working here before. He's not beyond throwing a literal tantrum to get what he wants. It's just ridiculous in general how he expects to be catered to.

Don't give in. Let his ass get fired over it. They'll hire someone else who is more likely to be a better worker. Yes, it may be rough for a week or two until someone new gets hired. But it will be worth be done with this lazy, entitled, worthless coworker.

I agree. He seems entitled. And hes getting three days off. He just wants more time. Which isnt fair to you guys as you get 6 hours off and he gets more than three days. Youre already short-staffed. I would just let him quit or get fired. Let him get fucked. It sounds mean, but he needs to learn hes not entitled to anything, and that the real world cant cater to his every need. If he really need this job, then hell do his job. He wants to act like a kid, he can find another job that will put up with him...

Id tell him off for you if I was there. Or just invite you to hang out so you had plans, but Im not anywhere close to you or my home, so...

But you can probably try avoiding him as much as you can. Or talk to l your boss before hand. Explain to her that you dont Want to switch. And then maybe if he ask you in front of everyone, you boss can say no without you having to say more...

Yeah. 3 days off while everyone else is working is so hard... If he wanted that time off, you out in to make sure you dont work. Either way, it may not be the companys fault. They cant hire if no one applies. Like at m job at the transportation station. If no one applies, they cant hire anyone. So, its stick with only 2 full times guys, and me as part time there now, for a job that really needs 4 people. They dont have anyone applying. And the most recently guy we had quit after a couple weeks...

Or more likely the case, they have people willing to bend over backwards and take it up the backside and work themselves to death instead of quitting.

Apparently the managers have been getting fussed at about the amount of overtime we've been getting. The company doesn't like this situation any more than we do, my coworker is just the only one unwilling to help ease the burden a bit by working an earlier shift than he likes. This guy gets 3 days in a row off this week, I get 2 but they're split up, and my manager only gets one. It won't hurt him to miss a Sunday afternoon one time, and his underhanded tricks and trying to lie/manipulate his way out of it is just annoying. He's perfectly happy to leave me hanging with just 6 hours rest between shifts, but 3 days is unfair to him? Even with him being out of town, and "not having time" to get to work puts him getting home at 3am, which leaves him 12 hours compared to the 6 I'd get. Not that I even believe he's going anywhere to begin with.

He may be acting like a baby and throwing a tantrum as you put it. That doesnt mean he should succumb to the companys failure to maintain an adequate work force that doesnt require people working doubles all the time just to keep up.

Stop blaming him for the companys shortcomings and your inability to stand up to it.

Neither the company, or me are asking anything unreasonable of him. Simply for him to work the given schedule. His hours aren't unreasonable, it's not an unreasonable shift. There's no reason for this to be an issue aside from him simply not wanting to do it. He's the only one of us working a regular shift, and his unwillingness to work one day he doesn't like, while I'm the one picking up all the slack and actually working unfair hours so he can can have his days off is frustrating.

So I ask, which is better? For him to stand up against the company and refuse to work just because he doesn't like it. Or would it be better for me to stand up, stick with my current schedule, and not switch? Those are the only options, and both require one of us to sacrifice something for the other, it's not the company that's being stood up to here.

Then theyre not advertising and/or paying enough to keep/get new employees. Its still the companys fault for not staying at a full work force. Or more likely the case, they have people willing to bend over backwards and take it up the backside and work themselves to death instead of quitting.

Idk about Kogas job, but for mine, I think they are doing as much as they can. For the pay, it wasnt bad for this city. And they just have everyone a 30% raise. For advertising, not only do the buses themselves advertise, but they have job fairs all the time. Though, some people also only want one position...

One job I had, the were 3 of us on my shift when there was supposed to be 4 and nights had 1 instead of 2 for the week. One of us alternated staying late each night. Management complained nonstop about all the overtime.

They made no efforts to hire or recruit. If they did hire anyone, it was sheer luck or because they lied about the pay. Lied as in $6 less an hour than promised. Anyone new immediately left after their first paycheck.

I feel bad for people having to work at places that make no effort to fix things.

How are you thinking this is Kogas fault. Technically, its not even the companys fault. Hea off for 3 days, complaining because he has to come in for an earlier shift. How is that anyones fault by the co-worker. Hes not even picking up the extra shifts and slack like Koga and the other good co-worker. You acting like another certain user...

If he had that specific day off because of personal reasons I'd understand however it doesn't seem like it's a guarantee for him so he should take what he's given. No harm in him asking to swap shifts but again this isn't a guarantee. Nothing more to be said than "tough shit" to him I guess.

Heres what you do. You just dont go in for his shift. And come in at the time you were scheduled. And of someone calls you, tell them he was suppose to work. If they say that you switched, tell them you never agreed to switch with him. And then the conversation is over. They most likely wont fire you because they have like no people, and that other kid wont pick up the slack. I'm so pissed right now. He told me he's gonna need me to stay late for him that night too because he'll be tired from his trip and need some extra sleep. I was just going to accept this crap and let it slide, I figured I could handle that shift easy enough since I had to do like 3 the past week anyway. Now though, after all this he's asking for even more time... I think I'm angry enough to put my foot down. I'm talking with my manager tomorrow and get her approval first, then tell him tomorrow night that I'm not doing it.

That leads to another problem though, if I get the schedule set back to normal, he has an excuse to not show up for his shift(out of town), so I'd likely end up working it anyway. Which would also lead to him not showing up that night either(my intended shift).

We'll just have to see how this works out, but I need to set boundaries with him or this'll keep happening.

Yeah, tell the jackass no. He's just gonna keep walking all over you if you don't.

Ok, just talked with my manager. Her solution is to mark him off the schedule that night and me and her split the day again. So I at least get to rest that morning and don't have to worry about how late he'll be showing up.

Sounds unsatisfactory since he just gets another day off, but it works well for me. Also, he's probably going to be angry about us making this decision without him and him losing part of his check, but I don't care. I was told if he comes in Sunday night anyway that I can go.

Yep, plus I learned my lesson. I'm going to refuse if this comes up again. Being wishy washy got me into this mess and I felt like I should help him at the time. After all this crap he pulled, that's out the window.
