What would attract YOU, CE, to watch wrestling?

AEW's ratings seem consistent around 1 million viewers, and WWE's ratings are between 2-2.5 million viewers and falling.

What could be done to attract entirely new fans to watch?

WWE has a hard enough time keeping existing fans, so I don't know what they could do to attract new ones. They'd basically have to overhaul the entire product and make it into something new, something that wouldn't have all the negative stigmas attached to professional wrestling.

I gave up on WWE back in 2014 (after watching it most of my life), and it would take something major to get me to come back.

It's gone back to being a niche like in the 80s. It's going through a mild resurgence because of more options besides WWE, but it will never match the hype and viewers the late 90s had.

The lapsed fans that have already returned recently is probably the best it's going to get. But the industry is still doing well despite how it may seem.

WWE, no. AEW, maybe. I'm rooting for NWA though. A lot of people have been missing the old school style of wrestling. At this point, old is new because it's different. Hopefully they'll be able to get the word out and attract more fans.

It cant, at least not in the numbers they want.

Wrestling got a reputation for being trash tv in the 90s so your typical person wont watch it, let alone go to shows. Meanwhile mainstream WWE has gotten dumber and more kid friendly the past 15 years which not only turns off teens but a ton of their older fans.

yea it can't. they already have a locked in fan base. the only real new additions are kids. neither organization is doing anything that made it interesting in the 90s and early 2000s. they're just pretending to be another MMA/real sport league and its just....whatever.

This is true. I loved the Attitude Era, but most of it was pretty trashy. Most of WWF wasn't much different than Jerry Springer. That's honestly why it became as big as it was.

But that's what got people to watch. a lot of things are regarded as Trash TV....People liked the wrestling but it was the stories and drama that kept people watching. These days the stories are very vanilla and the the focus is on the choreography in the ring....which is fun to watch sometimes, but its not going to keep people tuning in every week. I didn't watch every episode because i liked Kane's chokeslam....I wanted to see what was going to happen next in the story. and since people know the outcome is predetermined, the storyline has to be the main focus.

I agree that storylines are the issue (mostly with WWE), but I'm specifically referring to soap opera/reality show type angles that worked back then tend to be cringey now.

WWE is currently going through its SECOND cheating/cuckholding storyline this year, and has been maligned by most fans. It's like they're trying the stuff they did back then, and it just doesn't work now.

This for me. I can get cringey drama with better fake fighting and better special effects in the CW super hero shows which I can stream for free with limited commercials.

Yea i agree that the stories back then were cringy, but that's kinda what added to it. The gimmicks were over the top and the angles were too crazy to be real, but it was entertaining...These days its just "i'm a strong guy who is mad at another strong guy and i'm gonna beat him!"..that works for the MMA or Boxing where the match is real..not when you know the outcome is predetermined..there's little to no character any more. I guess you're right in that the attitude era might not work today, and that's probably why they switched to making it about the in ring product, but that won't gain them many fans.

1) Actually good video games.
2) More blood and ruthless aggression
3) Less corny terms like "WWE universe" and "WWE superstar," and allow wrestlers to call themselves wrestlers.
4) Give the wrestlers more creative control over their character. These soap opera writers DON'T make good characters and storylines.

I'll probably never watch the shows again, but I would like to have better video games. I love the customization available but the game play is just off. It's not supposed to be a simulation, it needs to be a simple arcade style game that isn't afraid to go a little over the top.

Having a mix of good and interesting storylines and characters with the current focus on the in ring matches could probably bring more people in.

It would be the best of both worlds if it was done right.

God yes. Lucha Underground might be the most fun I ever had watching wrestling. Some promotions like NJPW try to embrace realism and present wrestling like a sport, but LU went in the complete opposite direction and embraced the absurd and crazy. Between the crazy characters, the mythology behind the stories, and the violence, it was honestly closer to a TV adaptation of Mortal Kombat than an actual wrestling promotion.

Shame it got cancelled.

Tbh, I really liked how they made the storylines in TNA with the hidden camera recordings. It was easier to suspend your disbelief then. I was a huge wrestling fan till I was 14. I was totally obsessed with it and then it got so predictable because there's only so much you can do with wrestling. How many times can someone interfere in a match, or distract the referee or jump off a cage, etc...

Even now when I look back on some clips of old wrestling on YT. A lot of it seems childish. Even the stuff from Attitude/Ruthless Aggression Era which is arguably the best time period of wrestling.

One way wrestling can get back is by making more storylines, more backstage segments, better acting. Try something new or controversial.

Hell, Katie Vick is considered the worst storyline in history but I loved it because it was absolutely hilarious because HHH had the charisma to pull it off. I still laugh my ass off at "I screwed your brains out" lol

Haven't played the new ones. I picked up 2k16 for like 10 bucks and while it has some cool stuff, they still haven't figured out how to blend universe and career mode together to. Get the best "seasonal" experience.

I watched wrestling as a kid and went to one of the last UK shows WCW did, but I'd totally lost interest by 2003 and never really thought about it again. Cut to late 2016 and I see some online friends talking about how good Smackdown has been, I'm curious so I check it out and I'm instantly hooked and staying up late watching ppvs regularly. Then in January 2018 I went to a British wrestling show and saw Will Ospreay in a match, blew my mind and turned me on to New Japan. Since then I've abandoned WWE, tried almost every wrestling streaming service going and watched hundreds of matches that for a time I was keeping well organised ranked spreadsheets for. I guess I wouldn't count as a new fan because I liked it as a kid, but I think getting people who watched as a kid to start taking it seriously is very much possible. You just need word of mouth about quality wrestling and booking, going to live shows really gets across how powerful a wrestling match can be. I have two daughters, one biological one step, they've both shown an interest in wrestling when I've been watching it and I think they could be fans when they're older.

Wrestling is essentially competing with everything else out there.

Gaming
Skateboarding
Professional sports
Anime
Comic books

You name it. If wrestling is going to attract new fans, it has to be dynamic enough and interesting enough to attract younger viewers of all demographics as well as holding on to current wrestling fans.
I think AEW is really putting a fire under the ass of WWE to step up their overall presentation. Wrestling has always been it's best with different federations competing for the appeal of the fans.
