Kind of curious about this:
https://www.quora.com/Are-Chinese-people-racist-against-black-people

Was google's first response. Anybody in China that can testify? The NBA issue makes me think about it, and other things.

Are Chinese people racist against black people?

I'm American, and Ive lived in China for about 3 years so far. I've asked lots of people what they think of westerners, and I like white people but not black people is a response Ive heard a surprising of times. I always ask why, and the answers vary, with they're ugly or "they're bad being the most common reasons I've heard.

These same people always readily admit that they have never personally known any African-Americans or Africans when I press them on it. However, this admission hasnt ever seemed to inspire reconsideration of the matter. Im not saying that this could possibly be true for all Chinese people, but I've had this conversation a number of times, and it always feels the same. It feels normal to me now. Sad, but normal.

Beyond my own personal discussions with people, it does seem to me more generally that a negative bias towards Africans and African-Americans is the accepted cultural norm in China. It's not absolute, and I don't think many Chinese people would ever be rude or hostile to anyone on account of it. I guess that's the difference between Western racism and Chinese racism, at least with regard to people of African ancestry - people here are not proud, belligerent racists. (Japan is another, more complicated matter, and one not focused exclusively on race - thats a discussion for another question.) Most literally just have had no real-life interactions which might invite reflection on the matter.

Given this cultural backdrop, though, surely you can understand how it might lead to the situation you observed. You would never want to choose negative associations for your advertisements, and unfortunately, that is exactly how I would predict that a group of Chinese people would view an ad featuring black people. I hope this changes in my lifetime, because it does make me sad, but I think others will have made the same observations I have and drawn similar conclusions.

Many, many beliefs exist but it's clear that it's okay in Chinese culture to be terrifically biased against many (if not all other) cultures.

Recently I had a conflict with the Mom of the bully of my six year old. She insisted for weeks that the hitting, coercion, following, shunning, luring and ganging up behaviour of her son against mine was normal. I was mystified but I tried to understand her.

When I finally asked her if my son had done any of these 'normal' behaviours towards her son she was SHOCKED and stated '...absolutely NOT!! That would be so wrong!' When I probed further, I discovered that my son's dark skin made her son's relentless bullying behaviour appropriate in her view. I was even expected to understand this hierarchy and was treated like a dummy for not knowing that my son was a pee-on for others.

To be clear: she was a Canadian born Chinese person who works professionally as a Nurse in the city. She's not ignorant, uneducated or living in a world of political in-correctness. In her defense, she's got blinders on with regards to her princely son. Her poor kid had no true friends but she could not perceive this.

Chinese people can't hide their racism against Non-Chinese anymore and I feel sorry for the Chinese person who's not a racist/supremacist. You are not being represented...Chinese people do not speak out against it.

I see in this thread that there are many excuses, though.

The point blank answer is YES. I am an African-Canadian woman, married to an African-Canadian man with 2 children living in a predominantly Asian neighborhood in Toronto, Canada. And yes its 2017. I experience blatant RACISM frequently. When I walk my kids to the same school they attend, theres always that one Asian person that spits loudly in disgust because of my presence. To be fair it is usually an elderly asian person who grew up in different era. I get it. However, education and ideologies about race starts in the home. When I was with my family in the local pizza store this past weekend, there was a chinese family sitting in front of us with small children. The small child looked at us and said hello and we said hello back . This child then started mocking us, pretending to be taking a sh@t, pointing at us saying poo! poo!. None of the parents corrected the child until I shook my head and looked at the grandmother in disgust and she finally told the child to stop. I was embarrassed for myself, my family, for this child and his family. Instead of a getting a family dinner, I now had to acknowledge by childrens pain and explain to them about what happened. By western standards, racism amongst many cultures is alive and well. It doesnt matter how much we have been educated in our schools and workplaces to combat racism, education starts in the home. We raise and nurture our families in different neighborhoods with varying economic, social and religious backgrounds and sadly with racial undertones and stereotypes that we have become naive or oblivious too. I really dont care if racism is spawned from naivety, innocence, curiosity or ignorance. Regardless, it still hurts and can be damaging to an individuals psyche or a community. I disagree with Kevin D. Aslan when he says that In the West, racism takes real effort its a conscious decision. Its become so normalized in our daily lives that we as a people dont even realize that we are doing it! CHANGE takes real effort. Change cannot happen if we chose to keep our eyes blind and our ears deaf to what is happening in our communities regardless of where we live in the world.

Some are, sure. Just like some black people are racist against Chinese people or any other racial group of people.

Examples?:

-Ive been told that since Im not Native/Black, my racial experiences as an Asian person dont even come close to their obstacles.

-During a random encounter with a gal at a subway station, her friend whom was Black screamed, hes Asian, you can do better than that!

-Multiple times during school, I would be physically tested by other black students who thought I can push these Asians around because theyre weak and dont fight back.

-Ive watched a few rap roasting videos and more often than not, the black rappers will target the other guy with racial insults whereas when a rapper who isnt black decides to do the same thing back to them, suddenly its unacceptable.

If I were ignorant and held onto grudges, I would definitely think that Black people are racist towards Asians and like to play victim but I know that they dont represent everyone within their group. All I ask is that the same courtesy be extended to me and my people. It pisses me off when a group of American minorities attack another minority.

I cant lie though, I notice the double-standard. I tried searching, are black people racist against chinese and no results come through.

Its not my job to assume, but if and when someone decides to play the race card while being racist my god, do I hate those people.

Obviously it depends. It's definitely prevalent among older generations, and less so among younger Chinese.

In general China has a more lax attitude towards racism, where remarks generalizing a specific race (negative or positive), are considered acceptable, unless it's a negative generalization about Chinese people (or the country or government) which will trigger a huge backlash.

I find this puzzling too.

Its like okay, if you know that you feel unwelcome in Japan, then why stay there? No one is forcing you to live there, and you are more than welcome to leave and go to a country that is accommodating for you and your race.

My entire family is pretty much mildly racist towards all non Chinese people. They live in the Philippines and they still want everyone to find someone Chinese rather than Filipino.

I'm pretty sure they judge me, my sister, and cousin for dating non chinese OR Filipino people.

I'm dating a Mexican girl.
Sister just married a dude who's part black (also part filipino).
My cousin is marrying a white dude.

One of my cousins moved to Pittsburgh and her mom was like "You have to find someone that's Chinese and Christian." Honestly i think they'd prefer a Chinese Filipino person, rather than a straight Chinese or straight Filipino person.

I wish her the best of luck finding someone like that in Pittsburgh.

India and Mexico are arguably more racist to black people than anyone else

https://www.pri.org/stories/2016-02-25/being-black-india-can-be-deadly

Women traveling in India are often warned to be careful. But theres another persistent danger that fewer visitors are aware of: Racism.

On the night of Jan. 31, a Tanzanian woman was reportedly beaten, stripped and paraded naked by a mob in the southern city of Bengaluru after a road accident. The woman was not involved, but the crowd assumed that she knew the driver responsible because he too was black, from Sudan.

While police in India do not keep a separate record of racially motivated crimes, incidents like this one come into the limelight every year. Last March, two separate mob attacks were recorded against African students in Bengaluru. In 2014, a huge crowd chased three African men through a subway station in New Delhi. The murder of a Nigerian living in Goa led to protests and a diplomatic standoff between the two countries in 2013.

Even aside from such attacks, expats in India, especially those from African countries, have horror stories to tell about the racism they face every day.

The other day, someone spat at me, said Hassan Mubarak, a Nigerian student who has lived in Greater Noida, a city outside Delhi, for three years. They run away like Im a monkey, just because of the color of my skin? It saddens me deeply.

Most of the third world is pretty racist towards blacks in a general sense, but this is more among the people than it is on a government level. So you might have a country where a black person is "less desirable" to that country's people in terms of relationships or whatever, but they will not be harassed or shot at by the cops like in the USA.

For instance, I had a friend from the UAE who was black. He said he first experienced racism when he came to the USA, and that in the UAE he was very comfortable. This despite that in much of Asia and the Middle East, lighter skin is considered "more beautiful" and whatever nonsense. I'm not sure how deep the racism is in these places goes though, like if they have similar ideas to racists in the USA where some race realist will say something about certain races being "inherently more prone to crime" or whatever.

Not necessarily true. In a lot of Asian countries, blacks are seen as criminals. It's because in a lot of these countries, black migrants make up a decent portion of the criminal element, especially so with Nigerians. Go to Bangkok or Hong Kong and walk around at night. Within an hour you will have a black guy, most likely Nigerian offering to sell you drugs or pimp out one of his prostitutes.

Local governments make it worse because they portray this problem as an all black person problem. I've seen bars in Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and China that won't allow single black women inside because they assume she is a prostitute. Some will go as far as having signs saying "no Africans allowed" (seen similar signs for Israelis and Russians).
