I try to go when theyre distracted. When I first visited Lawrenceburg, TN I was accused of stealing a self check out ethernet cord. I threw the receipt out after passing the gates. She wanted me to dig through the trash. I couldnt find it. She had me walk in and check with the self checkout person. At least the self check out persons face seemed to agree with my mind: this is ridiculous. I was then lectured to keep my receipt. Later on they didnt check in my rug doctor. Rug doctor almost filed a credit report. Lectured me to keep a receipt. That Walmart is the worst, possibly the town too - though I do tend to keep receipts now.

Probably shoukd keep reciepts to be fair. Not for that as much as incase you gotta return something.

Its not a security measure. Theyre not looking for shoplifters, lol. The checkers are there to make sure everything rang up right and that you got the sale price on everything. Theyre not searching your bags.

Or at least thats the stores official explanation. The truth is that someone just standing at the door probably does deter some would be shoplifters. But the old lady at the door isnt trying to bust criminals. Lol.

Think about it logically. Do you think Walmart is hiring 65 year old ladies to wrestle shoplifters to the ground? Of course not. Thats not loss prevention standing at the door.

Acting awfully guilty tho
It's probably partially from growing up getting constantly followed at stores. That shit gets to you. Or at least it did to me. I guess I "fit the profile" of a shoplifter. Now that I'm older I get left alone. Even though one of the highest rates of shoplifting is actually in middle aged women.

Honestly, at the store I work at, they check the receipts for anyone who doesn't have stuff bagged. They don't profile anyone unless there's someone being obviously suspicious (walking in covered in dark clothes and a backpack, which happens frequently).

Also I heard that receipt checkers are gonna be computerized in the future. Exit doors don't open unless you have your receipt for it to scan. Not sure what they'd do for people who ended up not buying anything.

That's a fire/safety hazard, and I can't imagine anything like that being allowed to actually happen

Ive been held up before because I had a highly shoplifted item and for whatever reason my recipt didnt print. Was just a blank slip of paper. Guy was like 6 ft 1 though not the proverbial door greeter but hes the main one at this local walmart. Or was ratther until they got rid of them.

No they cant stop you but in order to write it off they gotta file a police report iirc.

Thats been disproven.

Why cant one of the largest chains rely on cameras, marked security, unmarked security, security tags, locked cages and displayed, etc. like every other business?

I wouldnt say its disprove. As i said earlier at my walmart they got rid of them and shoplifting skyrocketed immediately. They can't physically stop people but it does deter people I guess because the door greeter will have seen you walk out the door with the shit and be able to give a better description than what camera footage could.

Best buy is one place that really sticks out in my memory. They followed me so closely I felt guilty and I hadn't done anything wrong. How do you treat customers like that. Shit is fucked up.

My mom (manager of geek squad before it was geek squad) & stepdad worked at the one here in town when it first opened. I would go in to visit and if she was busy i'd walk around looking at stuff. Im in the media dept looking at cd's. My mom & Bonnie (head of security at the time) come out the small "time" office door thats by the security camera person. They chat for a few but my mom notices the whole time the guy has the camera on me. So my mom & Bonnie dont say anything to him about who i am. My mom tells the security guy to "watch this, ill get him", walks over to me, looks at the camera, then hugs me and mouths to the camera "this is my son".

Dude was fired 5 minutes later for the shit he saying while my mom & Bonnie were standing there with him. Apparently he was the only 1 in the whole place that didn't know that information.

Lone teenagers who look like they have no money who walk around aimlessly usually get the attention of LP, glad you got that guy fired, I guess.

If I have something outside of a bag or a simple small thing and I'm asked it's usually ok.

This way they can see the unbagged large item in the cart was indeed paid for and I'm not just slipping out with a small item I snuck into a bag. Other than that it depends on my mood and if they ask. I don't walk up to them, but usually they just want to see I have one in the first place.

I always keep my receipt in my hand from when I check out, because I do use the self checkout as 9 times out of 10 its faster. Mutiple times I am buying a flat of Gatorade, case of water, 30 pack of beer, capri sun 3 packs, so none of that is ever bagged. And that's like the only thing they check and most times they only scan one time and let me go. Or just wave me on as I get close.

If you are already prepared and accommodating then most times you won't even get stopped. It's honestly beyond me that people in this thread are being so insufferable about such a minor inconvenience.

After I pay for the stuff at the checkout, it becomes my property (and that includes the receipt). They're not getting their hands on it, especially when they have no reason to suspect me of stealing anything. Now, if they were to make you sign an agreement that you show your receipt on the way out (as CostCo does for their membership) then that would be different. But for now, if any Walmart employee wants my receipt then they can come and take it. I'm not handing it over of my own free will.

If you haven't stolen anything why does a simple check illicit such powerful negative emotions in you? Careful, such toxic attitudes can easily evolve into something ghastly if you don't make the effort to calm your inner demons

The only time normally I ever stop is if I'm buying a case of beer. It's not bagged, and I could definitely imagine someone just walking out and taking it. But the last time I did, I handed the guy the receipt and just said "keep it" and kept walking. He then tried to ask me if he could scan the beer, which was quite irritating. No, you have eyes, ding dong.

There's no benefit to stopping. What if you actually forgot to scan something? They don't let you just go back and pay for it, they'll have police waiting there.
