There are civilian replicas, but only the real things can fire full-auto. To own a legitimate automatic weapon, there are a bevy of hoops and hurdles to jump through. Usually you have to be in the military.

the basic answer here is because non-automatic rifle firing modes are either 'semiautomatic' or 'bolt action'

and most people who shoot either for sport or to hunt want a rifle that can fire more frequently than a bolt action rifle does

I use my Ruger Mini 14 when elk, moose or coyote hunting but its not an assault rifle. It just shoots a 7.62 like a common AR does.

It's far more difficult and costly to own an assault rifle than you give credit for, and only guns made on or before 1986 can be purchased legally making them very expensive (often around $15k).

Maybe some parts but I'm pretty damn spot on about this. Also, I agree that the public should be armed equally with its government and that the government should foot the bill for that cache if it's going to keep its own. It would be impossible and suicide to think about implementing that today, but only because america is such a state of hypocritical decay, and has been since before day one. It's not an organization that can be worked with in favor of the people, not to any reasonable extent. How into government mandated injections are you?
