Marvel has the merchandise rights. So a big MCU spiderman makes money for them even if they don't get a cent of the ticket sales. And Marvel hates Mary Jane Watson. They hate her status as a damsel in distress. They hate her status as a sex symbol. And they're probably still embarrassed over that figurine from years ago. And rather than fix any problems with the character, they're content to try and sweep her under the rug and act like she never existed. But if you brought back Tobey Maguire, you'd pretty much have to bring back Kirsten Dunst. That brings back Mary Jane Watson. That gets people thinking about her. And the movie will clear up any problems it can. She'll be an older, more mature character. And she'll undoubtedly be more willing and able to stick up for herself. To me it's worth it. I won't call her MJ I refuse to but as an original character shes better then any other romance in a live action Spider-Man movie.
