Absolutely. They put their lives on the line to protect their communities. They are what holds our society together, standing between civility and chaos. I respect them even more in a culture where police are underappreciated, and even vilified based on false narratives like the Michael Brown shit.

And its one reason I can never see myself voting for a modern day liberal Democratthose who seem to be quick to blame and vilify the police for all of societys problems. Who will jump on the BLM bandwagon as soon as a police shooting (of a black person) occurs. Immediately bringing race into it before any facts are known. And then never mentioning it again when the body camera footage releases showing the shooting was justified, which seems to be the case in 90% of these incidents.

Seeing damaging tweets like that from folks such as Harris, Sanders, and Warren ensures I will vote for Trump over them, 100% of the time.

No, not really. People use the argument "Well you don't see all the good they do, not everything gets recorded"

Well it goes both ways. We also don't see all the bad they do either. That fat bastard that just got charged with planting drugs on like 21 people was 21 incidents alone by one single officer that we never heard of and were entirely ignorant to until it came to light. 21 people that did absolutely nothing wrong had their lives destroyed.

How many other cops are doing this out there? How many innocents have been shot or killed and it was kept entirely out of the spotlight that never reached the news? How much is kept from us? I don't even think we grasp how deep it goes.

I did too. Then I learned how many were trigger happy, unqualified of the power and/or corrupt. It would be different if we heard about these things happening like once twice a year. Bit it's just too damn often. And these are just the ones that get caught. With them getting off so easy it doesn't really motivate the others to try to do better either.

"Heard about" is the active phrase. There are only about 900-1,000 police killings per year, in the U.S., total. This year is on track to be the lowest in 5 years so far.

When I used to ride a motorcycle, I felt like my city's PD was relatively protective of bikes. If people drove into my lane without seeing me, and it was witnessed, they'd pull the driver over. I had a few cops on the opposite lane of traffic flash their headlights to warn me of upcoming speed traps. One time my bike broke down on the freeway in standstill traffic because it overheated during the summer; the cop closed down the one lane traffic to allow me to walk my bike to the right-hand side of the freeway and spent a good half hour trying to jump start my bike to avoid having me to tow it.

If I've gotten pulled over with slight speeding and I'm in scrubs, they tend to give me a warning as kind of courtesy to other "line of duty" type of worker. But I'm also white and I also tend to treat them with a lot of respect, so I get that reflected in back. I recognize interactions with police with other people are not always like this, so I kind of understand the level of privilege I experience with my interactions as them.

This sounds like a withdrawal if I've ever heard one. You heard about that recent cop that had set up and arrested over 120 people just cause he felt like it. 6 or 7 of them were in prison at the moment he was caught and got released. How many other cops had he rode with during doing these things that just turned a blind eye? None of that goes in your statistic and look how long he got away with it before getting caught. Im sure you'd like to believe he's the only one tho.

Then theres that detective (who has a history of sexual assault in the first place) that was supposed to be protecting a 15 year old rape victim that ended up raping her after she had reported him to his superiors about him making inappropriate comments. He was and still is well protected by his peers. But yep, a few bad apples totally dont spoil the bunch, Cops are exempt from the rest of that full phrase. And bootlicker complacency will ensure it continues on forever.

I don't think it's a job that attracts the best kind of person. Police vary from state to state, but by and large racism and discrimination seems to be present in no small measure among them. That said, since I look white, I've never had any trouble with the popos. They've treated me in a very civil manner while giving me tickets, even though they knew I had a CCW.

I have a positive opinion of police here in Hawaii. Except for the one horrible case with former chief Louis Kealoha and his wife (but at least they got convicted), there's almost never any negative news on the cops here. And I've seen some good stuff happen too.

Like there was a homeless guy who punched a guy at the bus stop, pushed over a Japanese tourist, then stabbed the cop near his neck with a screwdriver while trying to take his gun. With the help of a passerby, the cop was able to subdue and arrest the hobo without any excessive force that the media loves to report on.

And then there was a stupid guy who ran across 5 lanes of traffic, and some police were right there to give him a ticket lol.

I have a neutral opinion, therefore I treat any police officer with a neutral eye. Some cops are bad, some cops are good, some are just looking to be badass, some are just looking to do a job. I never really know. We need structural police reform in this country if we want to eliminate that "distance" from the community and police.

I say this cause back home, these friendly cops let me and my friends go off with just a warning even though we clearly did something wrong. Yet when I moved somewhere else, the first thing I hear about is some cops using excessive/un-proportional force to resolve a situation. That shit makes me upset and make me fear for my own well-being.

Thats the problem. Theyre over zealous when doing their job vs tourists not harming anyone.

But a hobo in Waikiki could best you up and theyd give the blind eye unless it got really bad. Theyre just revenue creators
