So this is it, the afterlife. Most of humanity spends its time working on the Infinity program, a place for human consciousness to go after death. The age old question of, if there is life after death, was made obsolete over 50 years ago, when mankind created their own afterlife.

The population of earth had grown out of control and resources were becoming more scarce, while life spans were becoming longer and longer, and then a breakthrough, technology was developed that could download a persons identity, not just their memories, but everything that was stored in the brain, could be completely and totally replicated.

This allowed people to live forever if they wanted, and created a huge problem, with nobody dying anymore, the world just could not support new lives. Having a baby was a very precious and rarely allowed, all children were treasured and the cost to actually have your brain transferred increased drastically, preventing a majority of people from affording it.

This system did not last long, unrest over the division of assets and wealth had already been a global problem. Everyone was well informed/educated and the fact that only the wealthy could live forever, was the last straw. The world erupted into chaos and the end result was a new world order.

New rules were created, everyone could have their consciousness uploaded, and in fact most did it every day. The problem with space, and the lack of work now that most things were automated, were both resolved by creating a purely virtual world for digital identities. When you die, instead of being brought back in a robot, or transferred into another live body (illegal), you were instead transferred into a complete virtual world.

The world grew rapidly with so many people working on it, and initially it started out as a direct clone of the real world, but over time it was decided that eternity in the real world was boring, and if you are going to live forever, you need something to accomplish, something to strive for. After the basic frame was created, the infinity program project was started.

The project involved almost 90% of the human race working on creating a virtual world for them, and every other human, to eventually retire in. This world was based off role playing games, anime and books throughout the last 100 years or so, creating a leveling system, a world with monsters to fight, quests to accomplish, and equipment and items to find.

Huge virtual games already existed, and had been a main form of entertainment for decades, but this was different. It was hack proof, and a complete universe with its own laws. Players also had the option of turning on Real Death mode. Real Death mode was a way for any person to end their existence if they grew bored with the game, or, to add a real sense of risk and danger to the game.

You could turn on Real Death mode or turn it off at will, although it did take a few minutes for the change to go through. Those who start the game in this mode, and never leave it, are identified by a slight glow around their fingers (easy to hide with gloves).

Within a few years the IPP was larger by far then any online game in history, and constantly populated already by hundreds of thousands of people. The programs used to add content allowed mass amounts to be created with very little effort, and billions of people were working on it. The shear size of the IPP dwarfed the earth already, and continued to expand rapidly.

Work continued constantly, refining, expanding and creating a magical world that went on forever. After a decade there was enough content to last a person over 500 years easily, and most of it had never been touched yet.
