Doom is the original, yeah, I know, Wolfenstein, Catacomb, Blake Stone, etc, but Doom is where it took off, and sold tons of 386s to play it (you can do your word processing and spreadsheets on an 8088 or 286, but to play Doom, you need a 386).

Duke 3D and Shadow Warrior are great fun (you no mess with Lo Wang), but not pick up and play to the same extent as Doom, really a different kind of game. I even hooked up three computers in my basement with a 10-base-T network for multiplayer Doom.

Never even heard of Shadow Warrior or Blood.

I voted Duke Nukem. I know Duke's kind of looked down upon, but Doom always just seemed way too hard to me. Maybe I just didn't really give it a proper effort, cause Duke is pretty hard too if I'm being honest. Quake seemed fine from what I remember, I just didn't play it much.

I remember getting a demo disk for Blood with a magazine back in the day. Lot of fun, but of the choices I had to go with Doom. That being said, "Outlaws" was my favorite back then. Really fun FPS with an old west setting.

Wait, 90's retro or just 90's? >_> 90's retro makes it sound like a throwback to the 90's so I'm not sure if we're talking about new versions of games or the originals.

Quake doesn't really seem like it fits with the other choices, at least combined with the specific question. The others, yeah, they absolutely fit the bill for what would be retro shooters, with sprites and pseudo 3D environments, they're all fairly similar. Duke, Blood and Shadow even being made with the same engine. On the other side of the coin, Quake basically ushered in 3D as we know it, despite age, it's a far more technologically modern game.

Duke 3D, Quake, Wolfenstein 3D, and Hexen were all awesome games that I spent a lot of time playing, but Doom was the best of the best.

Although, Wolfenstein had that patch that turned the Nazi soldiers into Beavis and Butthead and the bosses into Barney the Dinosaur....

Quake.

Only other game of those I've played in its entirety was Duke 3D. Fun game but I didn't enjoy the level design as much.

"90s retro" doesn't really mean anything specific but I'm pretty sure he was talking about a certain style that Goldeneye doesn't really fit into. Of course, Quake doesn't really either. But if it's just 90s period then Half-Life should be on there. Wasn't the first Unreal tournament late 90s too?
