You find two $20 bills on the ground at the gas station in front of the door...you pick up the money and begin to walk away. About 30 seconds later, after you're about 20+ feet pass the door with the cash, a guy yells out, "HEY!"
It seems like it might be his two twenties, but you found it in front of the gas station on the ground. You cannot tell for sure that it's his. He might've actually seen the money too, for example, and intends to make a false claim on it.
Do you give him the the money or do you walk on with it?

the only case I'd take the money is if there was no one around I could determine as the owner.

This happened at a gas station I managed years ago. Another customer found a 20 on the ground and kept it. The guy that it belonged to accused me of stealing it.

This scenario happened to me decades ago. I already picked up the money. I couldn't tell that it was his, or see how he could prove that it was, so I kept on walking.

if you didn't see someone sitting somewhere where it fell, like no way to tell if it MIGHT be that person's, you just keep it

See, he couldn't even tell what happened to his alleged money, so how can he have a claim on it.

I found a $50 bill outside of a school building last year.

I just pretended to tie my shoe and pocketed it <_<.

There were probably cameras but I doubt they would check for $50.

I was walking my dog the other day and saw a $1 bill in somebody's yard. I had no issue taking it. Otherwise the wind would have blown it away eventually and somebody else would have gotten it.
