In 99% of cases no, you shouldn't do this unless you're installing trusted software from a trusted download source.

It would help to know specifically what you're talking about here.

Are you talking about the security ("User Account Control" / UAC) prompt that appears when you try to run an .exe, or are you saying that the program is asking for additional privileges to continue to modify your computer after you've installed them?

UAC is just a protective measure to ensure you know that you're installing something (or something is trying to install itself) on your computer, so if you know what you downloaded feel free to accept that for both.

As far as ongoing privileges, Steam might need it, but Firefox shouldn't. I would recommend starting off with that option disabled and see if the software runs as you need it to.

I'd be happy to. I've brought this up in the PC forum once or twice. I use Edge as my third browser to keep logged into a family youtube account that I use for my Roku players, etc. My first minor annoyance is that when opening up videos in a new tab, they automatically start playing. Unlike Chrome where videos don't start playing until you switch over to the tab. There's lots of little quality-of-life stuff that Edge just does get right. But one of my major problems occurred when trying to add videos to my playlists on YouTube. I'd get deep into someone's video section and the entire browser would just slow to a crawl. I'd start to add a video to the playlist and it would take a few seconds for the playlist menu to come up. It was unbelievable. I have 16gigs of RAM and 90% of it free. My browser shouldn't slow to a crawl just scrolling through someone's video thumbnails.

It is running considerably better plugged into charger than on battery, what can I do to get max performance all the time? I was steady at 144 FPS in Borderlands 2, all settings max, unplug and I was 25-30. Tried setting Nvidia control thing to max performance (in fact I shut off battery-save completely) but Im still only seeing shaky 60-70 FPS on battery

I skimmed through the thread and it looks like no one answered your question about what anti-virus to use (I could have missed it though). Windows Defender (which is already installed and then activated once you remove/deactivate Norton) is fine for the vast majority of users. Other solutions might offer more protection, so you might want to consider something else if you often visit websites that might be a bit sketchy. However, nowadays most viruses are installed "willingly" by the user. Paying close attention to what you're downloading and the websites you're using will be more effective than any antivirus. You should read articles on how to browse the internet safely because knowledge will be your best defense.

Also, Chrome and Firefox are both excellent browsers. People who are hard advocating their browser of choice have very personal reasons for choosing that browser that probably don't apply to you at the moment.

Thanks, I still havent gotten around to killing Norton but I think Ill be grabbing malwarebytes to be safe, and Ill do some reading tonight.

Unrelated, but why does Overwatch run like shit? Screen-tearing and ~80 degree temps without v-sync, capped 60 FPS with it. By all accounts, my GTX 1060 should be handling this game no problem.
