I try my hardest not to let how I feel affect my friendship with him, but every time I talk to him or when we rarely hang out in person (we live in different states) all the feelings come back. If it ever comes to the point where our friendship is negatively affected by this I will honestly probably have to stop being friends with him.

It's good that you were honest with each other. It's not however going to be good for you to continue pining for him. All you can realistically do is look to meet other people both romantically and non-romantically. This doesn't mean you'd need to give up the friendship that you already have, but it does mean that your attention and focus can be redirected.
What I would be cautious of though is if he then decides that he misses the attention that you give/gave him and behaves - if not flirtatiously, then more openly which is unfair on you.
