I've started to notice a lot of static now that we're deeper into winter/cold weather, and I think it's attributing to a lot of the crackling I've been getting lately. (Hopefully not an issue with my needle or something though. >_>) I hear some types of mats can help prevent static from building up as much, plus can help make the actual record sound better in general apparently.

Plus I think that one that came with the AT LP120-USB I got looks/feels cheap as shit and seems like it's not even flat. >_>

Anyone have any suggestions?

Do you have a cover for your turntable? Have you cleaned your vinyls? Dust particles could be the cause.

TC obviously isn't listening to Steely Dan if he's getting any static.

Yeah I have the cover on all the time. I do use a vinyl brush but I'm looking into maybe finding a good wet cleaning process. >_>

I just got my player in October. So it shouldn't be that I'd hope. >_>

Usually with a brand new stylus you'll hear more static for a little while. Picks up more dust and shit cause the tip is balls deep.

Do the crackles happen in the same spots?

Are these fairly new vinyls? Sometimes you just have to play them a few times from beginning to end before they sound better.

That's good to know. I'll stop from overly freaking out about it, but still try to clean my records. >_>

Most of them are 'new', but the one that I noticed the most on was a used one that was advertised to me as 'played once'. It was very dusty and took a hell of a lot of work to get the dust off of it so that's probably why it's been the worst of them all. Just being paranoid. =p

The platter on my player is just metal, probably a bad idea for me.

I've been collecting shitloads of records for years, and some of my oldest ones sound the clearest. A lot of new vinyl is made from recycled (lol environmentalists) vinyl which has small imperfections that virgin material doesn't. Dust gets caught in those sometimes, too.

IMO what won't hurt is getting one of those cheap RCA cleaner things on Amazon for like $10 and using that for a bit. Are you cleaning them only dry?

I've only been using a dry brush, yeah.

There's some liquid shit they sell (comes with that cheap RCA one) that bonds to the dust, making it easier to come out.

Doing it only dry just pushes it deeper into the grooves.

Balls deep and dry. Yikes.
