Sure Trump baby, I'll get right on that once I finish these rounds of radiation/chemo treatment that may or may not improve my chances of living long enough through stage iv colon cancer so that I get enough strength back that I may immediately go find work. Yep. That's precisely the first thing I'll do.

What sort of disabilities are we talking? Unless someone is literally a quadriplegic in a wheelchair they should be able to obtain *some* sort of work. It might be horrible and unpleasant unskilled work like a call centre, or packing mail order envelopes over and over but it's still work.

I agree with the general principle, however, that an advanced and civilised society should be able to provide for it's disadvantaged. It's a drop in the ocean compared to things like military spending or building a fucking border wall LOL

I'm fortunate enough to have a good career (accounting), but if some random luck thing happened like, God forbid, my wife got a brain tumor and needed long term care or something then our savings and insurance would only go so far before we'd probably start to experience hardships.

I said what type of disabilities. I know there aren't too many that would completely make you unable to work, but plenty of people also live in parts of the country where there aren't exactly a plethora of jobs nearby and there are plenty of people with bills that pile up during hard times. With the amount of food that we literally throw away in this country, it makes no sense to...

Not everyone CAN get a job. Pretty simple. This bill basically tells those people "too bad, so sad".

republicans have already redrawn districts so it doesn't matter if they do--they'll still retain control

dems' margin of victory in the last house election was vastly, vastly wider than their seat gains, and the senate has shifted as much due to people moving to urban centers as anything else. half the seats of the senate are decided by about a quarter of americans--typically the most conservative ones.

Fair enough. That said, I don't exactly trust our legislators to properly write/implement such things, nor do I trust them to not attempt to remove some of those circumstances at a future date.

really the biggest thing about this is almost no SNAP benefits go to families without children

if you review the actual funding provision provided, children are the main driver in receiving money

so this is mostly a set of rules that apply to a tiny fraction of the program's budget and those rules will probably cost more than they save. as tends to be the case for most 'make sure welfare is being used appropriately!!!111one' legislation

the job training req is probably the dumbest part of it since that directly impacts actual recipients and just creates paperwork

I dont think someone in intensive cancer treatment for advanced lung cancer can. Or various other cancers.

They can barely breathe, their immune system is probably compromised, they have no energy and either are in terrible pain or are HIGH AF on strong painkillers. And I was prettt much down for the count just from oxycodone. Random dizzy spells, lethargy and just a general apathy whenever I was on that shit.

Just one example.

My understanding of what Trump did is that it was pretty narrow. I thought he had just changed the cutoff for what areas count as 'high unemployment' and might be able to waive work requirements for that reason. If there's more I wasn't aware of it

The opposite is a huge problem as well. I've met people who make 40k to 60k a year and get food stamps because they know people who work in the system and cheat the system. They are taking away benefits from families who don't make enough money. It's complete bullshit.

I've seen some incredibly rich people get their kids lunch for free, using the moms 2 hour a week job as reference. All types of shit, memberships places. It's crazy.

Unbelievable. This is a side of the spectrum the government needs to crack down on.

Well its more like those lazy people are difficult to weed out and the measures necessary to do so will either 1) kick off lots of people who don't deserve to lose the subsidy or 2) be so expensive so as to make it cheaper just to let the perhaps 5% of abusers to just abuse the program

The thing you have to understand is that if your career goal is to live off public assistance you'll work at keeping it like it's your job because it is. It's really difficult to design hoops they won't jump through but that needy people down on their luck and trying to better themselves will. it's the other way around.

It's called public assistance fraud and there are in fact law enforcement agencies in every state that exist solely to crack down on it. If you see it, report it.

Have you considered the fact that theres not enough jobs for everyone? The point of government welfare programs are so that people in bad situations dont have to turn to crime to survive.
