People are so technologically ignorant. They buy things connected to the internet and expect the software to automagically do everything for them. Perhaps if he took the time to manually configure a firewall he could be better protected.

Maybe. I don't own anything like this so could a firewall be bypassed if there's a firmware bug? I mean a firewall is supposed to make it invisible online (more or less) but as tech gets more complicated there are new ways to get around everything.

I did some of that stuff back in school with webcams. The ones I got into were pretty easy.

Also, don't hack random peoples stuff because its definitely not legal.

Yeah, this "white hat hacker" gets on my nerves. "I am here to save you from people possibly spying on you... by spying on you. Your hero is off!"

It's like breaking into someone's house just to let them know their door was unlocked. "Oh wow thanks bro"

Yeah, that's gray hat, not white hat if that's what he was actually doing. White hat is generally employed or contracted by a company. And while they may employ someone to try and penetrate their system like this, I have never heard of a penetration test going this far. And no way in hell would they be allowed to communicate with a customer.

This whole thing smells like shit.

Perhaps if he took the time to manually configure a firewall he could be better protected.

So did the cameras connect to his computer first, or did they just connect directly to external servers? Or were they just completely unsecured and open to anyone over the internet that happened to know their IP?

Now I just want to know more.

I don't know but I assume it goes through his home internet via his router, which could be configured to allow only a set range of IPs through to the camera. I think that would be enough to deter most people. But then I guess the device he uses to remotely access the camera could also be hacked... And @DPsx7 is probably right that software vulnerabilities could also potentially be exploited to gain access. Somehow I doubt that was the case here though.

At the same time, though, that risk is often somewhat overstated. I remember an article from a few years ago talking about how "smart locks" (which open by touch when the correct smartphone or hob is within a certain range) could be broken into just by buying some ~$70 black market software and hanging out there long enough to intercept one of the bluetooth packets. While that's true, it kind of ignores that non-smart locks can be broken into with a $20 set of lockpicks and a bit of off-site practice (to say nothing of the crowbar option). Tumbler locks haven't been truly secure for centuries, yet many technophobes were happy to look at that article and say "nope, too much risk for me, I'll stick with my trusty tumbler lock."

Are there security concerns with any of these technologies? Of course. But it's still important to balance those with considering the security benefits they can yield, rather than just swearing off of anything more advanced than a deadbolt.
