My brother is 22 and still doesn't have a license. He keeps saying that he can get by with public transit, but I don't know how long that can remain the case.

Man the number of people trying to convinve contented nondrivers to drive ITT just proves that misery loves company.

no! I'm saying it's a priviledge. and priviledge is power

Nice try. But I know for a fact that knowledge is power, not privilege.

Its actually going decently. Need to practice a bit more before I take the road test tbh

In my state Identification cards look just like a drivers license, only difference is they say nondrivers license.

I have a car yet it's been a while since I last touched it (besides reversing 10 feet to a better parking space a couple days ago). I don't drive unless I have to. I hate driving. It's a pain to look for parking even though I'll be at my destination 10-30 minutes earlier than if I went on public transit.

But having a license is incredibly useful to have. If you travel, you need a passport, to get a passport, you need a license, be it your own or someone else's. It also opens doors to more job positions and you're guaranteed to not have problems when you need a valid ID.

^Darmik, I got my license at 24 and my first car at 26, and I only bought my car because I needed it for work. I can sympathize.

Bunch of kids grew up post recession of 2008 are now in their 20s, and for them having a car was never a big deal because money was never there. Also Uber and Lyft made getting anywhere extremely convenient and with self driving car that will most likely take over ridesharring, a need for a license will continue to dwindle.

Its not that big of a deal. Ive had my license for almost 3 years now but Ive never owned a car and Ive barely driven since I got my license. There are a lot of cities where you dont need to drive and it actually makes more sense not to do it

Yeah. Im definitely not denying that that's a huge con. It's the one thing that makes me consider it. Id love to be able to just take my dog out to the woods whenever I wanted. I can't afford it though. Im not healthy enough to get a job, not creative enough to have a talent and Im too paranoid to sell drugs lol

I was this person until I was 27. I took public transport to work and generally if I needed to drive somewhere I would be with her anyway so she'd drive.

Video games are my escapism so I guess I never really felt that need. If I'm ever on a weekend trip on my own I'm heading interstate to my hometown which I need to fly over there anyway. Not having that incentive was probably an issue for me as well which wasn't really fair on her. I've always lived near public transport as well.

I'm 33 and never had a license. It's never really bothered me. I can ride my bike most places I need to go or take a cab for things like grocery shopping.

Anytime I want to go to the city I just take the bus there and use the subway to get around.

Apparently this is a big deal in 'Murrica. I guess it's because of the many rural areas and the poor public transportation systems outside of the major cities.

I got my license when last year (28 now) because my job eventually became too inconvenient to travel to without it.

Until then, the main reason I never got my license was likely due to my father. He has this conflicting nature where on the one hand he was so protective that I never learned to ride a bike, but super critical and aggressive behind the wheel (which would come out when he tried to teach me from the passenger's seat).

But in Japan (I'm from America, btw), they have driving schools that people are expected to go to, and that environment was much better for me. Ungodly expensive though. But I also got a good deal for a car at auction, so overall it could have been much worse for my wallet.

Unless they live in an area with incredible public transit or can't afford a vehicle (although even there I might judge), I'd assume that there was something wrong with them because it's an almost universal thing.

Great public transportation here so I just never got one. Plus Uber is a thing if I need to get somewhere where public transit doesn't run or I don't want to take the extra time.

It's a dramatically cheaper and mildly less convenient lifestyle. I'd rather have the money.

I admit sometimes I really want to get out the house and with Michigan winters that's not always an option.

LOL. Thanks for the laugh. If you did drive, you would realize terrible winters are a great excuse to not have to leave the house and drive anywhere. Snow lost all its magic once I got a license.

True. But if I want to go somewhere in other seasons I walk or ride my bike. So it's the difference between having the option and not having the option.

Originally from a small town, rural community, but now live in a major city. I have no need for a car, and while some friends and family back home may joke about it, it really doesnt bother me. Public transportation, ride sharing, and bike/scooter sharing are fantastic here in DC.

There's plenty of legitimate reasons to not want to drive and ways to get around it, but its a bit silly to at least not learn how to do it. Its one of those things that isn't hard, you never forget it, and you never know when it might be useful.

I don't blame them. Driving sucks and I probably wouldn't have gotten my license if public transportation was good where I live. It's like a 30-40 minute walk to the closest bus stop, and I remember needing to take two different buses to get to a campus I was going to during my first semester of college which made the whole trip 2 hours.

Thankfully I had my parents and a friend with a similar schedule on certain days that semester, so I didn't have to waste 4 fucking hours every day.

unless you live in an urban area with good public transit, it's foolish to not have your license

I didn't. But got lucky and had a job and a dollar general walking distance. I'd get a ride when I could but if I had to walk I walked. (Job was roughly 4 miles away) dollar general was like 2 blocks over so that's where I went for groceries in between times I was able to get a ride to food Lion.

Part of it was driving scared me so I'd always find ways to avoid getting a license. Now that I am driving I actually enjoy it.

Good on them. I hate driving, but live in Oklahoma where nothing is walkable. If you can live somewhere where you don't have to drive, do it.

It's good for the environment, it's less stressful, and may even save you money.
