Board 8 > Anyone interested in getting some bonus matches after the true contest final?

I had an idea of getting some matches involving only the Noble Nine that have never happened in a 1v1 match. There's only 6 potential match combinations meeting those requirements.

Cloud/Mega Man
Crono/Samus
Crono/Sephiroth
Mario/Sonic
Mega Man/Samus
Sephiroth/Sonic

That's all of the remaining Noble Nine match-ups which have not happened in a 1v1 match. If we were to run multiple bonus matches at the same time, I assume Allen would avoid using the same character in more than one match. Which limits us to a maximum of 3 matches running at the same time. My personal picks are Cloud/Mega Man, Crono/Sephiroth, and Mario/Sonic. We were already denied Cloud/Mega Man in the Loser bracket, so that's one of my first choices. Mario/Sonic is another match that many people have been wanting to see for a long time.

I would still like to see a 4th bonus match included since that is possible, but I have no idea what to go with for the 4th bonus match. Maybe even a Link/Snake rematch of the 2013 bonus match, especially because Link has faced only one non-Nintendo opponent this contest.

The problem is that we got too many rematches, and we still don't have a good read on Sephiroth's strength. To a lesser extent, we're not quite as sure where Snake is because he had to face Zelda and the Samus result is difficult to read into.

I like the idea of bonus matches, but most of those aren't really the match-ups I'd want to see at this point as its pretty obvious:
Cloud>MM
Samus>Crono
Crono>Seph
Mario>Sonic
Samus>MM

If we were going to do 4 I'd want:

Sonic vs Sephiroth
Crono vs Snake
Cloud vs Zelda (assuming its not the loser's final, otherwise Samus vs Zelda)
Draven vs Link

I think I would like to see three other bonus matches along with (and before) this one, to answer some of those BURNING QUESTIONS this contest has given us.

1. Who is the strongest character to lose in Round 1? (Princess Peach vs. Terra Branford)
2. Who is the weakest Noble Niner? (Sonic the Hedgehog vs. Sephiroth)

That would have been a great idea during the 6 day Thanksgiving break. Taking all of the division final losers and putting them into a mini 8 character bracket would have allowed us to run one match per day during the Thanksgiving break. It would have been a good idea to keep the site interested in the contest during the break, because our vote totals dropped off after the break since we had no matches running during the break.

That message was there on the last day of matches before we had the Thanksgiving break, yet we didn't have any bonus matches during the break. So I wouldn't take that message as confirmation of any bonus matches.

In all seriousness though I think asking for something like Samus/Cloud or Sonic/Mario kind of misses the point. The bonus matches usually have some kind of symbolic value - the match between losers at the end of CBIX round 1, or the 4th/5th/6th place match.

It should have value beyond "who would win between two random characters that didn't get a chance to face off in the bracket". It should be funny or have some kind of additional selling point.

Agreed. As nice as it would be to see Cloud vs. Samus to settle some debates, bonus matches shouldn't just be extra matches for the sake of extra matches. That's why each of my choices, except for Link/Santa II, answers a discrete strength question among a symbolic grouping recognized beyond Board 8 - whether that's Round 1 losers, Noble Niners (with a whole contest built as a tribute to them, they've gained sitewide legitimacy as a concept), or non-Nintendo characters.

Of yours I think strongest non-Nintendo is by far the best. That one has the clearest, cleanest point and the one most easy to understand to someone who hasn't been intensely following the contest (because anyone with eyes can see within 5 seconds that Nintendo dominates here).

Cloud vs. Samus could be a pivotal match next time around with a bunch of points at stake in a Link-less bracket. If we do it now, we could answer too many questions.

At the same time, we do need more information on the strength of some characters since we got too many rematches in the Loser bracket. Sephiroth is still an unknown. We're not completely sure where Snake is at.

The only type of bonus match I am opposed to running are matches involving fictional characters that didn't originate from video games. I don't want to see matches like Link/Batman or Goku/Superman before their debut in the All-Fictional Character Battle.
