It's funny how fucking out of touch baby boomers can be. An earlier post ITT reminded me of this old dude I worked with.

He was in his 60's, and retired sometime in the last year or so. He always likes to boast about how his son went to college and doesn't have any student debt and his son works so hard and blah blah blah. I actually engaged him one day out of curiosity. His son (AND his wife) still lived with him through their mid 20s and early 30s. He didn't pay any bills, any rent, any food, nothing. He drove a hand-me-down car too. They didn't travel anywhere, and from he made it sound didn't have any fun either. Basically his son and wife watched tv all the time and blitzed their debt rent-free.

Like... I'm not advocating for frivolous spending by any means but that just sounds like a miserable ass life to me. Not to mention that luxury of living rent and expense-free isn't available to everyone.

By the way, everyone complaining about America should know it's much harder to be single and young in western Europe. Try affording decent rent or a mortgage in France or Germany or the UK on your own lmao. A much bigger chunk of your change than most of America, excluding obvious problem cities like San Francisco.

American youngsters can still thrive on their own if they have common sense, discipline, and if they aim for a good career. Note also that our parents lived in much smaller houses than we aim to live in these days. In terms of square feet, people 50 years ago got by with much less.

Americans want their parents' standard of living without working and earning it.

Proudclad how does that Boomer ass taste?

I'm not buying it. Interests just changed. If millennials are so broke why do we all have $1k phones gaming pcs multiple consoles decent vehicles go to festivals, concerts, eat out a bunch, vacations. I don't feel poor just different. I only know one dude who likes to play golf and spending $30 for an 8 pack of razors is dumb when you can buy an electric for cheaper that lasts years.

So if I omit an iphone, couple consoles, vehicles and an 8 pack of razors, ill be able to afford a house? Cool where do I sign up? I sick of paying 2k for rent.

If 2k a month is too much for you you probably shouldn't be buying all of that frivolous crap anyway.

If you cant afford a house, dont ever buy anything you like!

What's fun depends on the person though, though. Having no stress is enough fun for some. Some people would rather rent a movie or play a game than travel, too. Hell, even read a book. Eliminating debt that early, you're still well young enough to do all those things after that point, too.

Edit to fix being tired and stupid currently.

Uhh what the fuck

There's no way I could have afforded a rent of 2k, even when I was making $16/hr, 50 hour weeks

That was only $600-700 a week, or 2800 a month max, typically closer to $2500

It is also not true that people have to work much harder than their parents did to attain their standard of living.

Don't have kids out of wedlock, finish high school, and go to college or trade school for something in demand. Live on less than you make. That's literally all you have to do and anyone can attain this. And in most of America you can find 800 square foot homes or smaller for very reasonable and attainable prices.

People want the McMansion and their dad's brand new sports car and all the consumer spending.

Do you know how many people I've seen lose their factory jobs due to layoffs, or entire plants shutting down to move to other countries? These are some of the best paying jobs for people without an education, and have been for a long time, but they're disappearing before our very eyes

who woulda thunk it

except, its not "millennials" fault... its the corporations and government

No, that's what happens when we fail to teach kids good financial sense early on so they know how to live within their means when they become adults.

You... you do realize that prices rising and wages stagnating is a fact, right?

Like, an actual, documented, easily traceable one?

Living within means becomes much harder when your means cover steadily less and less

very true. inflation without sufficient pay is a major factor.

You must have me confused with someone else. I was pretty much born and raised in the culture of blue collar work, so I understand and empathize with the plight of these people quite well. It's no longer my cup of tea, but I'll never look down on those that live by it.

The problem is that our system isn't set up to accommodate the people displaced by a shrinking number of manufacturing jobs. Factories are the lifeblood of many small to medium sized Midwestern towns, and when they shut down, you could be looking at 1000s of people all trying to flood into every other labor market in the area

I pay for my own food and sometimes theirs as well. I never change the heat or AC. The water and electricity bills are theirs, not mine.

None of this implies paying for any of my bills. I don't have the bills you claim they're paying for. That would be the case if, for example, they were paying for my phone bill or credit card bill, or if I were staying at an apartment they were paying for, but none of that is the case.

So you're in denial over the reality that you are in fact a burden on your parents since you do not try to help pay for your share of their bills.

It's affecting a lot more millenials than you might think. Again, I'm gonna argue from a Midwestern perspective here, but an easily attainable education is not a reality in many of these places. At best, a small town might have a community college, or a university an hour+ away in a bigger town. I drive 50 miles each way for school because I'm fucking insane I guess, and I found a job that works around school schedules and my fiance helps make ends meet (at the cost of her not being able to go to school), but many can't find a situation like this that works for them

And to add to that, it was just this year that a town near me lost not only their community college branch, but their state university branch as well, so that's something to consider happening.

I saw a article once where a millennial was defending several things they where supposedly ruining. While they made some points on some the one that killed me was the housing market. Person actually argued it was stupid to want to own a house and renting was superior. Main point was you'd be stuck there even if the neighborhood became shitty where as renting you could more easily up and move. If the housing market wasn't a mess selling a house wouldn't be that hard.

I've moved around quite a bit growing up and my family never had problems selling the house.

Off topic I loved one article though titled "why are millennials obsessed with food?" Someone commented "need it to live, next" sure that's not what the article writer was getting at but I still laughed.

I have to say, though, given how badly my generation is getting fucked, I don't feel guilty at all for living with my parents, even if it's considered "mooching." Sorry if that bothers you, but consider first taking a look at the mooching capitalist elephant in the room if you want to know why roughly a third of my generation shares that living arrangement.

It's much more common in Western Europe and in countries that are much more left than France, Germany, etc. Like Venezuela lmfao.

America remains the best option for anyone who wants to pursue a good career and be independent. Only 33% of millennials live at home. That means 67% are not. And living at home for a while is in fact a good thing, because it lets you save money and invest it into a richer and stabler future. More people should live at home or with room mates for a while so they can save up money.

It doesn't bother me at all that you live at home to save money. What "bothers" me is how you give unsolicited advice and input about how it's "so hard" even though you literally have no experience lol.

This is kinda decent advice, actually. Lotta people would have it easier for longer if the saved up more and earlier.
