each Doctor should have to say for like 10 years. it's kinda weird how they just rush through all these actors. I know they came up with a plot device to explain the changes, but it shouldn't happen so often in the story. that's dumb. imagine if we only got a new Doctor once a decade

I dropped the show after the last season because I found that season to be super bland, but I've heard terrible things about Jodie's run thus far. Most of that relates to Chibnall's writing, though, which is supposedly atrocious.

That's why it's pathetic on multiple levels. They should have made sure it wasn't going to be an issue before hiring her.

Jodie's been great. The companions not so much, but not bad to the point of ruining anything. But the stories are really bad. They're getting better as the season goes on, though. So... hope?

10 years is way too long. the show is about change
3-5 years is a perfect amount of time for the average doctor

imo it is the writing. Chibnall should never have been showrunner
Jodie does pretty decent, although she does feel like just a mix between Tennant and Smith
Graham is a great companion, the other two suck

that being said, aside from Matt Smith, every New Who Doctor has had a pretty shit first series so it's par for the course

It's not that Jodie is quitting outright, supposedly Chibnall isn't happy with his workload (poor baby), and she's more loyal to him than the show. Still not a good look, IMO.

Whittaker had her first child in 2015 and the report suggests that her desire to spend more time with her young child will likely lead Whittaker towards ending her run as the Doctor during the 2019 Christmas special.

After all the feminist posturing regarding the first female Doctor, the actress leaving after only a year to spend more time with her child does seem to give some ammunition to traditional gender role advocates.

I heard the ratings for the first episode or two were fantastic, but then it dropped off pretty sharply. I would assume that was because people wanted to see what the first female Doctor was all about, but then a third realized it didn't make them like Doctor Who any more than a male Doctor did.

But then, I don't know if most seasons start high and drop off sharply in general regardless of cast.

well to be fair feminism was about choice
a womans right to choose to work or be a stay at home mom rather than being forced to be a stay at home man

if a man or woman wants to stay at home to raise the kids thats fine
if a man or woman wants to focus on their career thats fine too

they generally do
specifically for doctor who, whenever there's a new doctor or companion there will be high premier ratings and then slide down gradually throughout the series, only to bounce back up again

I believe the ratings are not the biggest thing though, given BBC has iplayer and internationally people can watch on BBCA, Amazon, iTunes, etc. that may not be considered as well

That's how it works with just about anything really. People show up to see the new thing, it drops quickly when it isn't what most of them are really into. Then it trickles down as interest wanes unless something big happens to restart the process.

The current ratings seem on par with what Doctor Who's brought in regularly, so yeah, the most likely possibility is that people showed up to shout "girl power" for a couple of weeks and then moved on to the next shiny misogynist object to fight oppression over.

Didn't read the article, but iirc, there are two reasons she's considering leaving. The first is because BBC wants to have yearly seasons of Doctor Who, which will take away from spending the time she wants with her child. The second is because Chibnall doesn't like how things are being handled behind the scenes of the show, which is making him consider leaving. If he goes, she talked about leaving with him since she apparently wanted the part with him as showrunner

They're still higher than they were in the Capaldi years. But yes, they have gone down from the huge opening. But that's to be expected too. We'll see where it levels off.

Studios float these kind of rumors around to gauge online response so that can make better choices going forward, so people are really just giving them what they want.

Though there's probably a lot less "OMG, how can she be leaving, I love her on the show" than hoped.
