As a non American I am baffled. I know USA is a big country but seriously you would think they would do something for an area that has fires EVERY year!

Paradise near Sacramento. Killed at least 5 people and ~2000 structures. The smoke is pretty bad here in the East Bay.

The problem is a lack of rain causing vast areas of land to become super dry, so the fires spread incredibly quickly.

You want the US to do something about a natural process that is essential for forest growth? That's dumb.

Nope. California stopped having controlled burns about 50 years ago, so now if anything catches fire it spreads REALLY quickly. They were really dumb to stop that practice.

We do still have controlled burns. Quite a few of them in the LA/OC area, in fact. Shit still catches on fire.

If there was a will in Cali there would be a way... The problem is they'd have to agree to spend a lot more than the rest of the country to protect themselves by a factor of ten. Cali can get the money, but no one cares if the houses on fire aren't in their town.

I'd wager 95% of the homes that burn are owned by people that can afford to lose them.

Most of the time anyway. They are usually very private, very expensive homes.

I once saw someone dissing Florida saying California is much better, specially for the lack of humidity. Well, how many wildfires emerge in that state? (sure, they get hurricanes instead, but all those fires and how far they spread is disheartening)

The current fire in LA county is even directly impacting the mega rich celebrities. People like the Kardashians and Lady Gaga have had to evacuate.

Which really surprises me because I figured at least these people would be able to throw enough money around to make sure their homes are safe.

Our homes won't sink in a swamp.

Also we don't have to live in florida.

I know that's always an advantage (specially when the population is one that causes fires!), and I don't even live in the U.S. Just pointing out that the weather is dry and thus prone to leading things to burn.
