Washington DC is considering lowering the voting age to 16 as city council is preparing on a bill to do so in all elections, both local and federal!!

A bill won 3-0 approval in the Judiciary and Public Safety committee and will get final vote before full council this month

The 26th Amendment to the US Constitution guarantees citizens 18 and older the right to vote but scholars said it doesn't prevent a state, or in this the nation's capital from setting a lower age.

Charles Allen says this bill will "enfranchise the District's young people and bring their voices into the political process"

It would allow 10,400 teens between 16 and 17 to vote in the 2020 election and more than 80% of them identify as youth of colour.

Vote16DC Campaign Manager Dave Chandrasekaran said "DC is poised to become the first major American city ot grant voting rights to 16-17 year olds. At a time when political discourse in this country is so divisive, it's really inspiriting to witness how passionate DC youth are having a voice and positively influencing our community"

Hmmm... well, the 26th Amendment only states that the right to vote shall not be denied on the basis of age for citizens that are at least 18, so I guess there's nothing inherently blocking DC and the states from lowering it further.

Make government/civics a mandatory freshmen course in high school, lower the voting age to 15 or 16, universal voter registration.

You're old enough to work and pay taxes, you're old enough to vote.

My biggest concern is that if the voting age is lowered without an amendment protecting it, Republicans might pass laws to raise the voting age back up in a time leading up to an election.

Nothing in the constitution bothers to define who can vote, and all the subsequent amendments do is prevent various groups of people from being told they can't.
