It's pretty good yeah. I wouldn't consider it a masterpiece by any means but it's an excellent side scrolling metroidvania/souls type game.

If you liked Rogue Legacy or Dead Cells, you'll love Hollow Knight.

I thought it was phenomenal and it was insane how much content was packed in. The game is absolutely massive. The graphics and music were great. The only flaw I would say is probably the beginning 5 hours? They're kind of a slog. So much of a slog that I actually gave up on playing it thinking nothing else would happen and the power ups were garbage. But damn once you make it past that you really get rewarded. I'm pretty glad I gave it a second shot and regret giving up so early. But then again I thought it would be a short game. IT IS NOT.

Pretty great game. The art direction is stunningly detailed, the characters are charming, and the world is massive and fun to explore. Only real negative is that some of the bosses and lategame challenges take things one step too far with the trollolol challenges. On a personal level, I felt the tone of the game world was pretty one-note, quiet and somber throughout (with the exception of Deepnest's creepiness); games like Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night mixed up the tone of the regions to have a nicer mix of upbeat, somber, dreadful, intense, etc.

I respectfully disagree with this point. The late game bosses were my absolute favorite part of the game, similar to the optional bosses in Rogue Legacy. It really puts your personal skill to the test.

I suppose FWIW, I consider a trolololl challenge to be more like the 100 Super Jump challenge in Super Mario RPG.

No, I mean plenty about the game other than those things. I had to actually look up what the Path of Pain was, since I never found it on my own yet kept hearing about it. I guess that's another mark against Hollow Knight: in a genre were people are constantly complaining about secrets hidden behind unmarked breakable walls and other obtuse techniques, Hollow Knight cranks it to 11 by hiding some very unique content behind random breakable walls.

The first inkling I got that the game would end up being a troll game was the Soul Master fight. Challenging, but fair and well-paced, enough so that I just barely beat him on the first try and felt really good about it...until 'Bwahaha you're not done yet expectations subverted BLAM BLAM BLAM yer ded.' Many bosses that came after were tough but fair, but too many of them (mostly found in the game's bizarre overabundance of bouncy monsters) just threw one too many things at you at once, and ended up being far more frustrating than fun, to the point where my enthusiasm to continue with the game dried up and I put it down right before the ending.

I wouldn't write a thesis on it, but off the top of my head, Watcher Knights bounce (annoying as hell), the spirit boss in the Queen's Garden bounces almost exclusively, God Tamer's mount bounces (annoying as fuck). Dung Defender's attacks also heavily involve bouncing, but he's in the tough-but-fair category (plus it's hard not to be a bro with the guy). I feel like I'm missing a couple more examples, and that's just the bosses.

watcher knights are best dealt with via late game gear and die really fast. without it they are admittedly very hard.

marmu was super easy, idk what to tell you

god tamer, no argument i guess, but you only need to do fool trial for the hunter's mark.

I think every boss in the game is totally fair. I'd recommend trying again some time. As someone already said, the late game bosses are really enjoyable fights. Plus, there's only one other boss you didn't list that bounces. The boss battles that are generally the top rated don't feature any bouncing.
