Except the faction you chose apparently is the middle ground that excels at nothing.... BUT they are "slightly" better at everything

How do you capitalize on this advantage?

Kanbei from Advance Wars, all units cost 20% more and are 20% more powerful as compared to like a 50% bonus to artillery or infantry.

I'd call Kanbei more of a Protoss or Adeptus Custodes - they're the expensive elites

I guess hope to take advantage of my opponent's weaknesses since every specialized faction has a weakness in addition to its strength?

That makes me think of the Space Marines from Dawn of War 1, being a jack of all trades you can just exploit any weaknesses of the opponent since you can literally do anything.

I almost never choose Jack of All Trades, Master of None-type characters or factions. There are almost always specific facets of gameplay design that I favor over others that leads me to specialize into one extreme or another.

in a strategy game, it would be something like to identify your enemy's weakness and use your limited advantage to your... advantage.

but really, I think such a race is the worst one to choose. it reminds me of picking Mario in SMB2. He's not the fastest, strongest, highest jumper, or longest jumper, he's just average at everything. which is pretty terrible.

It's usually the go-to character/class for people who are new to a game, and don't necessarily know what weaknesses and advantages to exploit, or how to capitalize on character differences.

It's why the "main character" in a lot of fighting games tends to be the most balanced one, while your fast strikers or power hitters are supporting cast. It helps funnel new players to the easiest characters to use, while people who know what specialists they prefer will gravitate to others.

Aren't like 90% of the factions some variant of Space Marine.

I more am meaning about how to figure out the dominant strategy when you don't have a ton of leverage, but not any exploitable weaknesses either
