Should be like jury duty. It's your God damn civic duty regardless of what side you're on. Don't other countries like Australia make voting mandatory? Just do the same shit. Keep voting on a weekend or even make the polls open for a full week.

No, that's absurd. It's your right to vote, or not to vote. I served in the military, I have never voted a day in my life unless someone inspires me so much to do so. Last election especially I had zero interest in voting for either clown in that circus of a campaign.

You can always submit an empty ballot and that should count as something as well. If the majority of Americans dont agree on either candidate that should mean something.

I didn't know you could just submit an empty ballot, and what is the point of even doing so? Not being rude, it's a legitimate question.

Yes, and because when you vote you also vote for ballot measures and other things as well. So you can have an opinion on, let's say solar energy, and still not want to vote for whomever.

I dunno about actually just plain empty ballots (and I also don't know about USA, canadian here) but you can decline or purposefully void your ballot and they do keep track of how many people do this. The intended message is that you're interested in voting and democracy but feel as though none of the candidates are a good choice or sufficiently represent your views and priorities. Sorta like a protest vote

in contrast to just plain not showing up at all which could mean all sorts of things.

Nah, really couldn't care less. Hillary, Trump, Bernie, Ronald McDonald, or my left shoe, it's all going to be the same bullshit with one side saying the other is ruining the country. Then when it shifts to the other party, it will still be the same shit once again. There is no point. It's all just a silly game.

then add a "none of the above" option to the ballot. not sure what should happen if that ends up getting the majority of votes in that case, but if a logical system like Ranked Choice voting were implemented, it would be easier to address.

Aren't jobs supposed to let you take some time to vote? Maybe that's up to the employer.

Edit: so far my search shows that they aren't legally required to give to the time to vote, but they can't prevent you from it.

It's more important that you're at least presented the opportunity to vote. Some people have weird hours that don't give them time to go out and vote, or they don't know that they can have their ballot mailed to them. At least by sending in an empty ballot, you're confirming that the voting system hasn't COMPLETELY failed its people, and that you could vote if you felt like it.

I don't support this. 2012 for instance was completely uninspiring. Now I did vote in 2016 but Trump moved me. If the candidates can't inspire me, why should I be forced to vote? I'll vote again for Trump in 2020 if he runs but if he doesn't and no one else comes a long, I'll find something else to do
