With around 24 hours remaining until the Switch Online Service begins, we have to do the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe gaming night at some point today. I chose 8:00 PM EST to maximize our chances of getting people to participate. Sorry for the people who only own the Wii U version, but few people play games on Wii U now that the Switch has been out for over a year. You would have better odds of playing Mario Kart on Switch because the Switch already has a higher ownership on this site than the Wii U ever had.

If you want to play with us, all you have to do is go into the Online area and select "Tournaments". Then enter the following code to begin playing:

We will play on 150cc. I opted for 150cc because I know some people might not like 200cc for being too hardcore. It's really easy to fly off the track on 200cc, unless you use Smart Steering.

Starting tomorrow, you will need the service to play games online. Tonight is the last night to play online without having a subscription to the online service.

I'm actually a bit unclear, does this count for absolutely anything that connects to the internet, like balloon hunting in Odyssey, or just actual multiplayer like in Splatoon/Mario Kart? If it's the former I'm going to be pretty sad. :(

It depends on the game. Fortnite and Paladins will still have a free online without a subscription. Nintendo first-party won't though. I don't know how it will affect balloon world, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Welp, I got a communication error shortly after starting up that race.

This is not going well at all.

Connection errors up the wazoo for me. My Switch is almost always on a 1 bar signal (on a scale of 1 to 3 bars). I had to be lucky just to get into a race earlier before losing a connection. Although I did replace my router less than 3 weeks ago with a brand new router (which has a bigger signal range), it's now compensated by the fact I moved the router farther away from my room where I have my Switch.

If the Nintendo Network is being used much more heavily tonight (by people wanting to play online for free before the Online Service starts), that could be a potential cause for the connection errors that I'm having.

I also tried playing with random people online (I selected the Regional option) and I'm still having problems connecting to other people. I might need to fool around with the settings on my new router to see if I can get better performance for online gaming.
