For Glory is by FAR more popular now. For Fun players don't play smash online anymore. Time mode sucks, FFA makes good connections much harder and harder to begin in the first place, the casual fanbase is just not interested in playing the game 4 years after release as much either.

GTA Online is designed to allow 15 player races with no weapons as one of the styles of play, via menu options and through the developer balancing the cars for it to... vary degrees of success.

Alright, it allows it, but racing isn't a version of the main mode, it's one activity. Like a minigame. In Smash Bros free-for-all with items, you're still trying to ring out the other players or AI, there's just a different number of them and you may or may not have items. FFA Smash Bros also isn't an MMO.
Power Stone isn't a fighting game because it has basically no moveset depth or differences between characters. I'll say a NUNS/Dissidia is about the limit of the genre.

Yeah, Smash online isn't a good experience if you just want to play for fun.

Hopefully Ultimate fixes that.

Generally new releases fix that by having a large number of people playing overall. The best solution often seems to be setting up matches externally.

For Glory wasn't a great experience either. Both could've used significantly more customization. But the connections could get pretty awful with 4 player matchmaking, the few times I tried.

People repeatedly using literally to mean literally the opposite thing of what it actually means and it getting put in the dictionary as a result doesn't make those people right.

It means they were wrong and the dictionary said "eh to hell with it sure why not"
