The ending was that Donnie wanted to do right by some other dimension, so he makes the ultimate sacrifice of letting the engine drop kill him as intended, so that his girlfriend can live on in the other dimension. Or something like that. He's also responsible for moving the engine to drop in his room or something?

Fuck lol I'm not nearly invested in this movie enough to adequately explain it. I'm not even arguing for this movie btw. I liked it when it was more ambiguous and it was just a standard time lapse or a dream sequence kind of thing. The actual explanation makes the move worse

It was I and most people my age group's intro to independant films. I loved it then, but now...I don't know. There's some entertaining stuff, but it's trying to do too much, and explaining too little. I understand it's intentionally ambiguous, but people tried to dissect it into more than it actually was. The Director's Cut, which literally had paragraphed title cards every few minutes, really doubled-down on over-complicating things. They tried to tie up loose ends, and just made it worse.

And then the guy's next movie, Southland Tales, THAT was a pretentious fucking disaster.

I thought that was his sister not his girlfriend

Well the grand scheme was that his girlfriend is stabbed in the alternate dimension, so to avoid the possibility of that situation altogether, he let his original dimension self die by being crushed by the engine. Cuz he saw that him being alive will eventually lead to his girlfriend's death in one way or another. I think his family is relatively safe?

Clearly everyone shitting on the movie don't even remember it... the other girl was "stabbed" in the other dimension? WTF are you even going on about it's not even about dimensions.

It's a time loop. Whether Donnie willfully stayed in bed at the end, or if he thought it was all just a crazy dream is the audiences call to make, there is no official answer because it's not in the movie.

The beauty of Donnie Darko is that there is a lot going on under the surface if you're willing to look for it, now some folk will talk about manipulated dead this and that with multiple or even all the other characters from the film and I'll just cut to the chase and simply say the only true manipulated dead in the movie is Frank the Rabbit, Donnie Darko's sister's boyfriend who accidentally RAN OVER Donnie's girlfriend.

The girls mother was the one who was stabbed by her step dad, and that is why she had to move into Donnie's town in the first place, and choose the name Gretchen.

Either way, the whole point of the movie was for Donnie to learn or find "love" or rather something worth saving the entire universe for, which he found in Gretchen.

Obviously all the time loops colliding back together has everyone having some sort of dream / deja vu, Frank (the Rabbit) touches his eye that was shot by Donnie, Patrick Swayze character is crying hopefully about to turn himself into the police, etc.

It's a decent movie, and not trash.

No, there was an explain it all sorta book for Donnie Darko. It's not a time loop. Donnie crossed over into another dimension and dropped an engine onto himself to stop the two dimensions from colliding and ending the world. This isn't even a joke lol look it up. This movie became worse when it stopped being about interpretation and speculation and the Word of God relating to this work explanation is exponentially worse than the classic time loop.

I agree but bear with me here, because even in the Director's Cut with the actual excerpts from The Philosophy of Time Travel, there are still a lot of ambiguous loose ends, like who if anybody besides Frank is manipulated dead, the philosophy of time travel is only there to help the average viewer in the world building aspect IMO, and help understand. It's still ambiguous as to whether Donnie actually choose to stay in bed or if he still thought it was a dream / time loop. There could still have been a million failures where he got out of bed and went to the golf course. It really is all up to the viewer to decide for themselves.

Furthermore this is only my opinion and personal take on the movie... there are a lotttt of theories and speculations out there, check out the Reddit for it if you wanna delve into it but some of them are pretty obviously dumb.
