There's stereotypes that african american people are more violent than white people. A white person makes a joke about black people's skin. The white person doesn't think it's racist. An African american who heard the joke tells the guy to fuck off. Then the white guy says "I was just joking" as though joking absolve him of any wrongdoing or the implications of making fun of people based upon their skin color following centuries of violence towards people of African descent in america. Back to this. It isn't about it being a joke, it's that the line itself is used to make fun of trans people who advocate for themselves by correcting others when misgendered. No trans person has ever seriously said "did you assume my gender" and if you use some tumblr post that isn't evidence at all. So then, because of people intentionally and accidentally misgendering trans people and trans people self advocating to be identified correctly, people made up this line. Meaning that now any time a trans person self advocates, in the minds of people who despise us, it causes them to think "see trans people are easily offended" when in reality it's that the people making these types of "jokes" are reinforcing the societal argument that trans people are invalid and unworthy of being defended or validated, and that anyone who does defend them is a joke. When taken conjunction with historic and present resistance to trans people even existing, yeah, it's offensive to make that joke.
