A Mexican congresswoman was kidnapped at gunpoint on Tuesday, just a month and a half after she was first elected.

Norma Azucena Rodrguez Zamora, who was elected on July 1 as part of the center-left Party of the Democratic Revolution to represent Veracruz state, was driving along a highway in central Hidalgo, the BBC reported. Two men shot at her vehicle, causing it to flip and injuring an assistant as well as Rodrguezs driver. The elected congresswoman was then pulled from the vehicle and forced to leave with the gunmen.

According to the driver, the two men had their faces covered with hoods. It was also reported that the men were driving a black car.

Photos shared by Mexican media showed the politicians car turned on its side, with emergency officials and bystanders inspecting the damage. Smoke billowed from the vehicle and glass was scattered along the highway.

Rodrguez, who was voted to represent one of Mexicos most violent states, was set to officially take office on September 1. She previously served as the mayor of the Veracruz town, Tihuatln.

The politicians kidnapping came after Genaro Negrete Urbano, the mayor of Naupan, was abducted along the same Hidalgo highway in July. He was later found shot dead earlier this month.

Mexicos recent electionwhich was the largest ever in the countrys modern historywas also hailed as the nations bloodiest. More than 120 politicians and political candidates were reported killed since September 2017.

More than 35,000 people in Mexico have gone missing, and over 200,000 have been murdered since 2006. Last year saw a record number of killings, with the countrys interior ministry reporting 29,168 in totalthe highest level since the government started keeping records in 1997.

Violence in the U.S. southern neighbor extends beyond politics, however. In April, the seaside area surrounding the resort city of Cancn was rocked by a record number of killings in a single day as drug-trafficking gangs stepped up violence. On April 4 alone, nine people were killed, almost twice the previous record of five in one day, with a total of 14 people being executed in 36 hours.

At the beginning of June, on the other side of Mexico, retired American couple Ray Ball, 72, and Jo Anne Butler, 69, were killed at their beach townhome in Baha de Los ngeles. According to a local government official, they were killed in an attempted robbery.

In January, the State Department warned against travel to the Mexican states of Colima, Guerrero, Michoacn, Sinaloa and Tamaulipas, issuing the same do-not-travel advisory it gives for war-torn Syria. The U.S. Consulate in Playa del Carmen, located about an hour from Cancun, was also briefly shuttered in February after a tourist ferry exploded and injured 24 people.

According to a February report by Forbes, more Americans were murdered in Mexico than in all other foreign countries put together in 2016. Whereas only 69 Americans were killed around the world in homicides, 75 were reported murdered in Mexico. However, some 35 million Americans are estimated to have visited Mexico last year in total.

Asking if it's safe and posting this news that shows it's not. Let's just say, depends on where you go. You go to border towns, or Mexico City it's a bad idea. You go certain spots you'll be ok, I used to go all the time to visit my dad.

Stupid post because Mexico City is not one of the dangerous spots. Literally safer than most major US cities and almost all serious crime targets locals.

But that's because Americans visit specific safe places that are for tourists.

Mexico clearly has a violent crime problem.

Do not travel due to crime. Armed groups operate independently of the government in many areas of Guerrero. Members of these groups frequently maintain roadblocks and may use violence towards travelers.

U.S. government employees are prohibited from travel to the entire state of Guerrero, including Acapulco.

Literally imagine if that happened in America. Imagine if there was an entire state that had armed groups of people put up roadblocks and attack travelers and the government could do nothing about it. Like, in Alabama or something. Man that'd be crazy.

Kinda wish the US would fire up the war machine and do some good ol' fashioned nation building.

But seriously, I would like to see the US invite/annex Mexico into the Union, slice it up into 2 - 4 states, and use our resources to clean up their government, combat the cartels, and establish a secure border where it meets Colombia.

I think it would mostly do away with a lot of the illegal immigration issue by making the Mexicans citizens of the US and the Colombian border looks like it would be a lot more manageable than the Mexican border.

But that seems unlikely.

No, we don't need another annexation or nation build.

Yes we should send in special forces to ID and eradicate the Cartels.

But that's for special ops to clean house.

It should literally be a Search & Destroy mission.

ID the Cartels & it's members, eliminate post haste.

I think we should help our southern neighbors to start rounding up the gangs, they're tearing the country apart.

Didn't our country had to do that one time when gangs got really bad in the 90s?

I was saying no, our country did not have to do that. Local police forces often have dedicated gang units in bigger cities, but there was no sweeping initiative to hunt down every last gang member in the country. There was, and continues to be, a trend of harassing and harming black men under the pretense of gang activity, but thats another question entirely.

As for Mexico, if you decriminalize and make safely available (in America, btw; we caused this) all of the drugs they push, they lose all of their power.
