Liberty Radio stopped airing on the radio in December, but still streams online. The FCC is charging that the station was also illegally broadcasting on an FM wavelength.

Yeah, that's what the FCC does. They do actually stop pirate radios.

I've honestly thought about setting up a pirate radio station.
Every primer I've found said, "it's not a question of if the FCC cracks down, but when".

Alex Jones could fight this legally, but it's a losing battle.

Yes.

A lot of stations don't filter out the echoes (so you hear radio stations on TV), that they don't lock the signal frequency down (so it wavers and sometimes floats into other stations), and if it's located near an airline the FCC doesn't fuck around then.

It may take years, but they will come.

I imagine that the studio is technically fine, you're not going to worry that they don't have a phase lock, for example.
But, it's increadibly public, which does put it up above other pirate radios who do have their laces tied.

Plus, it's static, it's not those sweet radio stations that you pop up on the bed of a truck and power through a car battery.
So that means it can be taken even more easily. You can't argue that it's just for show.

Just how much effort would it have taken for Jones to have a legal broadcast? I'm not familiar with the process but is he only infamous for the crap he spews or does he actually make decent cash from sponsorship and the products he sells? (Assuming it's a fees issue that lead to this.)

About $100k, which is the price if you're buying from the ground up. Most of his equipment probably meets FCC standards anyway so that would reduce the price a good bit.
I don't know his finances if he could afford that.

Oh yeah, here's from the Q&A from a... documentation... that I have.
Q: Other than an FCC fine for engaging in illegal transmissions, what other risks do I take in engaging in
micro-radio broadcasts?
A: Section 501 of the Act provides that violations of the Act can result in the imposition of a $10,000 fine or by
imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year, or both. A second conviction results in a potentially longer
sentence. If you are prosecuted under this section of the Act, and you are indigent (unable to hire an attorney),
the court will have to appoint one for you.

There's a real possibility that Alex Jones started off as pirate radio, then got popular, popular enough to go legal.
But, the FCC doesn't exactly fuck around with previously pirate radio stations, and made it so he couldn't get a lisense.

I would like to begin by saying that I think Alex Jones is easily one of the most reprehensible pundits you could ever listen to. I am not at all a fan of his antics.

Now that we have gotten all of that out of the way, I would also like to say, I am disgusted by the effort to silence him. I strongly feel it is a slippery slope to silencing thought and speech with which you disagree. As a libertarian, I must say, it is certainly within the rights of Google, Apple, Spotify, etc, to remove him from their platform, as they are all private companies. But I do respectfully disagree with it. I also strongly disagree with any form of government intervention when it comes to this guy's broadcasts.
