when questioning comic book readers who have an enormous amount of books on their pull list every month i get this as a counter argument

that unless you are a broke student or working at mcdonalds dropping 100 bucks or maybe a little more each month on comic books is just a little drop in the bucket especially if it's something you really love

however i can't agree with that as much of a fan of the medium I am...it's still seen as a bit nuts for me to believe comic book fans would disregard any complaints about price and say it's all good if you love it

maybe I'm wrong but when someone's comic book reading hobby goes over the price of a video game and starts threatening to cost as much as one of your monthly bills that's a bit insane(and if the bills aren't cheap then well dumping 100 bucks or more a month isn't viable)

true i mean if it's your only hobby i guess but considering the average comic book fan probably sticks close to marvel/dc that's even more money spent on anniversary issues crossover tie-ins and double shipping

even with that mind some of them counter back saying "it's normal for people to spend over a hundred dollars on the weekend"

maybe i just never knew the right people but most people I've talked to[even online]typically don't spend over a hundred dollars every weekend

i just think comics can be a hobby that gets way too expensive if you aren't careful and simply just a buy crap ton of stuff every month without a care in the world

one thing that always terrifies me is the backlog...that can get out of hand

I don't understand this topic. What you spend is completely related to what you earn.

Adjust your perspective and this isn't worth a topic.

I went to school for years and now I have a good job with a decent income. My partner too. Sometimes I spend more than 100 dollars a month on comics. Sometimes less.

I'm confused why this bothers you.

If you have very little expenses or expenses that are easily covered $100 a month isn't much. Granted $100 a month can be a lot if you say... are making car payments, and a mortgage, along with other utilities. That $100 could be better spent elsewhere.

I mean you could be a NEET on welfare and in a section 8 housing unit and $500 a month could go to comics/video games/figurines. Meanwhile you could own a car and a home and work a decent job but only spare $100 for entertainment a month.

this still depends what your cashflow is.

i have a car payment, rent, utilities, medical bills, credit card, insurance, cell phone, student loans, etc and $100 isn't a ton for me to spend on things i want to buy.

maybe 100 dollars a month isn't as many comics as i think it is but i keep thinking at that price you get quite a hefty backlog

10-13 comics a month typically goes for around $30-$40 bucks a month

Comic book inflation works pretty damn fast. Going from $3 an issue to $4 or $5 and sometimes more within just a few posts.

The cover price is pretty insane these days. Not sure how much better subscriptions are.

Granted, I guess inflation is an issue, too. If you go way back, in 1960 a McDonald's hamburger was 15-cents and a comic book was 10-cents. Nowadays that same hamburger is a dollar and the cover price for comics is like three or four dollars. In the past almost 60 years, comics have gone from being worth 66% of a McDonald's hamburger to 300-400% of a McDonald's hamburger... and both have half the meat >_>

Considering that it's kinda relevant, that's a stupid post. Your personal income can certainly factor into whether you see sufficient value in something. If I bought something on a whim, it's because I wanted the it and could easily afford it. If I couldn't easily afford it, I'd have to want it a lot more. The object itself is the same, but the perceived value has changed. As for what is or isn't wasting money, any non-essential -- and even upgraded versions of essential items -- could be argued as being wasteful because you strictly don't need them.
