22. Barret Wallace (Final Fantasy VII)

The Good: As odd as it is to say about a dude with a gun-arm, I think Barret is probably one of the more realistically portrayed characters in Final Fantasy VII. He isn't personally involved in any of the game's wacky plot twists. He's just a dude who wants to make the Planet a better place so that his daughter can have a good future, and his constant struggles over wanting to be with her but knowing in order to save the Planet, he has to be away from her, make him sympathetic and relatable. I also love using Barret in battle. He's part of my ideal party (Cloud/Tifa/Barret, yo). The dude's a tank, and the fact that most of his weapons are long-range means he can hit any enemy and you can even put him in the back row to make him even tankier. Plus, Missing Score is probably one of the better ultimate weapons because it doesn't rely on dumb variables that can actually make you weaker during the battle like HP or your Limit gauge. Just load him up with mastered Materia, and he's even more of a killing machine.

The Bad: This is just a me thing probably, but Barret curses way too much for my liking. I wish they had toned that down a bit. Also, the dude is basically a terrorist who kills a lot of innocent people in the early part of the game, even if he had good intentions. Fortunately, I'm glad the game has a scene where Cait Sith calls him out on it and forces him to confront it.

The Best: The showdown with Dyne is super good. I always love one-on-one storyline battles, and this one is no exception. The aftermath between the two of them is really bittersweet, and you can't help but feel for the guy after it's all said and done. That entire part of the game is about Barret's sense of guilt over his past, and he never actually gets rid of it or moves past it here. If anything, this arc actually deepens his feelings of guilt.

When I replayed FF7 as an adult barret really stood out to me as a great character. All his personal storylines and struggles just worked so well.

He was always character I used a lot bit on that play through he never left my party when he was available. Definitely my favorite FF7 character and one of favorite video game characters as a whole.

Though agree the cursing thing was a bit to much, if they reduced that in the remake I would be happy.

I think I'd actually like Barret a lot less uncensored. The ridiculous looking censorship gives him a sense of lightheartedness in his foul mouth that he would mostly (mostly-- he still says some wacky stuff that isn't censored) lack otherwise. Which I'm aware is not actually the point but yeah generally I get annoyed by characters cursing too much and Barret didn't bug me when he did it.

Strangely did find it a bit annoying when Cid did. Think it's because we already had Barret doing it and because he has less wacky non-cursing stuff, though I do love 'goddamn tea' and I'm not sure Barret ever tops that in any of his lines.
